(Scene) Cambridge market

Customer: 3 kilos of potatoes please.

Vegetable stall holder: OK love, I'll give you all the small ones, they'll be easier to carry.

Customer: Oh thank you.

Ana Tue 10-Sep-13 11:31:28

And nobody actually says 'potahto'...do they?

dustyangel Tue 10-Sep-13 11:25:02

Reading this thread is why we had jacket potatoes last night, after DH had said to me "Do you have to keep singing that song?" grin

Greatnan Tue 10-Sep-13 09:46:17

We used to bake them in the bonfire on Guy Fawkes night!

I am assailed by a sudden memory - of potatoes raked out from the embers of a camp fire in the wood at the bottom of the road... the bits that weren't either raw or charred were delicious - or maybe they just seemed delicious
to the pre-pubescent Feetlebaum!

Oh, I've just read through this whilst eating a couple of toasted spicy buns, and it's convinced me it's jacket spuds, not veg curry this evening. I love potatoes, in all their different guises. Mashed potato is such comfort food, jersey royals at the start of the new spud season, Maris Pipers for roasting or making into twice cooked oven chips. My mouth is watering. Greatnan's attitude to walking is inspirational. I've always loved to walk, but the onset of RA in my 20's has led me to have osteo arthritis earlier than I'd have hoped. I am convinced if I hadn't walked so much, the hip, knee and foot pain would be so much worse. Plus - it does burn up those calories for those of us who love proper butter in our oven jackets (not microwaved - I agree, the flavour goes and the texture is like blotting paper I feel)

When we went to Florence my DH, of Irish descent, was very excited to discover they did giant ravioli with potato filling hmm

Greatnan Tue 10-Sep-13 08:46:02

Quite right, Kitty - we need to know!
My potato fix today will be the ones I added to my chicken stew - they will have had a whole day to absorb the flavours!

kittylester Tue 10-Sep-13 08:28:39

Haven't tried them yet GN - suppose I'd better - in the interests of research. grin

Greatnan Tue 10-Sep-13 08:17:54

Depends on the result - are they nicely brown and crispy?

kittylester Tue 10-Sep-13 08:04:22

The new bistro in the village serve triple cooked chips - is that a refinement too far?

Lona Mon 09-Sep-13 22:25:51

anno wink I might.............

annodomini Mon 09-Sep-13 20:46:50

Lona, do you know all my addictions?

Ana Mon 09-Sep-13 20:42:15

Well I've just had some leftover new potatoes sautéed in butter - delicious!

Lona Mon 09-Sep-13 20:40:04

with crunchy salt anno........

annodomini Mon 09-Sep-13 19:53:07

Thick cut, twice fried English chips....

Greatnan Mon 09-Sep-13 19:51:30

But not flabby white English chip shop chips - crispy brown allumettes, with mayonnaise.

Ariadne Mon 09-Sep-13 19:46:21

Chips.....

AlieOxon I remember being sent to buy 5 lb King Edwards in the 1950s so no, I can't remember a time when potatoes were just potatoes except, perhaps, supermarket potatoes in the 1970s and 1980s. But then I never bought my vegetables anywhere other than a greengrocers or market.

Greatnan Mon 09-Sep-13 17:44:48

That is a real shame, feetle. I wasted much of my own best years as a hard drinking, overeating couch potato. I was lucky that I had not damaged my organs but I had developed some arthritis and had slightly raised bp. I was 70 when I took up really serious mountain walking, starting quite gradually until I got acclimatised to the altitude - my flat is at 3,600 feet,

feetlebaum Mon 09-Sep-13 17:03:41

@Greatnan - funny thing, I never really relished the idea of walking until it was a tad too late... lack of half a lung, degenerated disks and a lack of balance rather rule it out. And now, of course I'd be happy to go for the odd stroll...

Lona Mon 09-Sep-13 16:57:33

Look at my face......................it's not bovvered!
