meter reading

We do our own meter readings for gas and electricity, as do a lot of people probably, but our 'yearly' meter reading was taken by the person presumably employed to do this, in July. Our bill was higher this year, but we expected that with the increase in fuel cost and the cold winter, so we just accepted that, BUT I thought I would check for the two months from July 13 - Sept 13, which I did (I actually rembered!). When I tried to enter the two separate figures gas/electricity, the system would not accept the gas reading, so I checked again, only to find that the reading taken by the professional was 200 more than the reading I had just taken.
I have duly contacted the suppliers, but it is worth checking your meters if you can to make sure they have been correctly read.

I am with EDF now and I have started to read my meters monthly, and my monthly payment is adjusted if necessary, 2 days after I read my meters. I agree, the meter reader's reading has to be checked because I apparently used 1 kilowat of electricity in 3 months about a year ago. I wish!

That happened with me. The reader had misread a 5 and put 8, so I was charged an extra 300 units. The bill was so ridiculous that I rang them up and said did you not think it weird that I had use that much gas over 3 hot months.
I am with Ecotricity. They asked me to take a photo of the real reading and send it to them by email. This was before I became so ill. I doubt if I could do it now. At least Ecotricity has a good customer service.

I have just had an e-mail asking for a photo of the meter. I have merely replied to the effect that I do not have the facility for photographing the meter.

That's what happened at work when we queried the bill! I couldn't believe it when they demanded a photo of the meter (which is outside, and not easily accessible).

They eventually did send a meter reader out, and it was discovered that the previous reading had actually been taken from the wrong meter (by one of their employees, not us!).

I've just had a bill for £136 and a doubling oh monthly dd for my water as my usage seems to have over doubled!shock
I know my daughter has done few nappy washes, about 6 once a month in the last 3/12 but that would surely not account for it.
I've rung Wessex water and they're going to retread the meter!hmm

Reread, even

We do seem to be in the hands of these 'hand-held' computer recorders, and I think it must be so easy, on either particularly sunny or dull days to either mis-read these, or put the wrong figures in. They obviously save time and money, but the results need to be carefully checked, I think.
