SPITTING IN THE STREET COURT CASE

I was so pleased to read that magistrates agreed with Waltham Forest Council that 'spitting in the street was a prosecutable offence. GOOD.

2 men had taken the case to court in a test case and obviously lost. They were made to pay £300 each, including doubling their original fine of £80 for an on-the-spot fine. I wonder who backed them or did they pay out of their own pockets?

What ever. I hope more people would be fined, I ABSOLUTELY DETEST SPITTING IN THE STREET. angry

A sort of Freudian slip spit grin

Absent not everyone is in agreement.

Aka Thu 26-Sept-13 17:26:17

So you don't mind spitting Jess?

Aka Thu 26-Sept-13 17:22:34

Phoenix quite! wink

I thought the camels were all in Australia actually. Don't they have more bactrian camels in the outback than they do in asia?

Have to say that 14 year old boys seem to go through a phase where they are collectively convinced that spitting is the way to impress girls. Those of us who are aware of Freud might smirk at the symbolism. Bless their clueless cotton socks I say.
Cyclists, marathon runners etc will always spit I suspect. Along with other non-aesthetic practices involving body fluids.
But really - have the police not got anything better to do with their time in north London than prosecute spitters? Were the chewers chewing Khat? Is this what the prosecution is really about? A link would help pogs.

Yuk I feel slightly nauseous now. Spitting, dropping litter whats wrong with people. Why on earth would you. I just have no understanding of why they do it.

Penstemmon Wed 25-Sept-13 20:29:18

it will slow down as the substance being chewed I think has been made illegal.

It's even worse here in 'trendy' Liegh on Sea Essex. A lot of young Asian men use chewing tobacco. It's bright red and they don't just limit it to the pavement. They take great delight in spitting it over cars.
One chap filmed them doing it and gave the evidence to the police ( everyone knows who they are) but nothing has come of it and it's still going on.

You don't have camels in South Island, absent? They must all be in North Island then. grin

Anne58 Wed 25-Sept-13 19:53:57

If I posted in a really really small font, would that count as whispering?

I remember Victoria Wood saying something about accidentally choosing a library book in large print, she said it was like being shouted at grin

absent Wed 25-Sept-13 19:41:04

Why is there so much shouting on this thread when everyone is in agreement about the nastiness of spitting in public?

Spitting is just one of the things I dislike about Beijing. It is not just the spitting but the disgusting sound of the phlegm being brought up from the back of the throat. YUK YUK YUK
It is a little better since the Olympics when there was an effort to stop it and generally the better educated men no longer do it except in the privacy of his own bathroom in the case of my SiL. Just a pity the bathroom is next to the sitting room !!

I don't know about where you live BAnanas, but we don't have many camels – spitting or otherwise – in our local streets. grin

BAnanas Wed 25-Sept-13 19:01:55

Probably give them the hump though! God that was awful I'm off to cook the diner.

BAnanas Wed 25-Sept-13 19:01:17

Camels spit, I'd fine them too!

shysal Wed 25-Sept-13 18:41:34

My father used to get a lot of phlegm which usually went into a handkerchief, but he would sometimes spit into the fire where it sizzled. He also occasionally spat out of the car window whilst driving, and if the rear window was also open there was the danger of it re-entering into my face! Yuk! He was otherwise a well-mannered gentleman.

Anne58 Wed 25-Sept-13 18:39:41

Footballers, need I say more? YUK!

BAnanas Wed 25-Sept-13 18:27:16

It is if you have a brick or two in it! INNIT!

Lona Wed 25-Sept-13 18:19:27

I thought that's what handbags were for... wink

POGS Wed 25-Sept-13 18:15:07

BAnanas

Swinging your handbag in the street can be a dangerous thing. wink

Penstemmon Wed 25-Sept-13 18:02:48

That'll learn him! grin

BAnanas Wed 25-Sept-13 17:58:43

My older son was a macho posturing youth at one stage. We were out together when he was about 15 or so, a rare occurrence at that age. Out of the blue he did this very thing, I was startled and really angry with him at the time and I have to admit it brought out my inner Margaret Thatcher and I hand bagged him there and then. It was a knee jerk reaction, please don't report me to Childline retrospectively anyone, I haven't done it since and I'm happy to say that he no longer spits in the street!

POGS Wed 25-Sept-13 17:54:14

Sorry about capitals, nothing intended, just didn't think about it. blush

BAnanas Wed 25-Sept-13 17:48:52

Yes horrible and unhygienic loads of bacteria in saliva I imagine. Nothing worse than being startled by a globule of spit being hurtled out as you are passing someone in the street. Seems to be part of some macho posturing by youths of a certain age, or is that me being sexist? Haven't seen any girls do it. What's wrong with carrying tissues for that purpose and then disposing of them in the proper place or is that just too "poncy" ?

Penstemmon Wed 25-Sept-13 17:44:57

Pogs no need to shout! I think we all agree it is an unhealthy thing to do. I happened to see a speedy cyclist on the main road clear his nose onto the tarmac yesterday..just as disgusting. confused
