The Golden Rice Triangle by Matthew Taylor. A different perspective – about how the different sides of this debate seek to resolve problems.

Not quite sure what to say about this. Who's lost their moral compass?
Prize for killing off bees, anyone?

Why is it that those who agree with GM consider their thinking is rational, but those who disagree with it are considered to be woolly thinkers?
It is well known that it is impossible to prove a negative.
Once the trials are done in this country, the GM cannot be put back in the bottle. I eat organic food. I do not wish it to be contaminated with GM. The fact that the amount of GM allowable in organic foods has increased dramatically shows that the scientists are not sure of their science.

Anywhere where rice can be grown sweet potatoes and carrots are also grown. Let them eat carrots.

According to my daughter the scientist who originally developed golden rice had intended that it should be supplied free to people who wanted it in the hope of doing some good. I suppose one might ask why so many people in Asia are still affected by vitamin deficiencies if there are already ample vitamin rich vegetables for them?

'Wooly thinking'? I'm surprised at you JessM as I've always considered you a rational thinker.

There are two strong arguments against GM products. One has been clearly highlighted by Flickety and others. The other is a scientific one. This is not simply, selective breeding or hybridisation as some people seem to think. I know you know the difference.

JessM Mon 07-Oct-13 20:39:38

oh what happened to my earlier post? I don't think it is a good link, it is more of the same wooly thinking.
Every GM advance should be considered rationally and individually.

Mention of that black/white vision reminds me - we all remember the impact of thalidomide, and the deformities it caused, but it also has valuable uses in other fields. When these were published a little while ago, there was an outcry against it being used at all, for anything, because of the feelings of those who had suffered such trauma in the past. Is this a valid reason for not utilising the drug?

Laughing now at the charm expressed in your last post, aka.

Try moss stitich next time.

thatbags Mon 07-Oct-13 07:51:32

I recognised it. Thought it stupid.

Aka Mon 07-Oct-13 07:50:44

Piffle.
Some people are too up their own arse methinks to recognise a little tongue in cheek ribbing about thread headings.

thatbags Mon 07-Oct-13 07:40:52

Yes. It seems to me to be a result of monochrome thinking, by which I mean having one's ideas of good and bad in black and white, with no room for maneouvre or colour variation. Life simply isn't that simple. Quite the opposite, in fact: life is incredibly complicated.

GP seems to have a too simplistic view of life on many issues and so have become, for me, a pain in the butt.

JessM Mon 07-Oct-13 07:25:42

Nice to have that clarified bags grin
It occurs to me that being implacably opposed to GM because there are concerns about some products and some business practices is rather like campaigning against the availability of all modern medicines because pharmaceutical companies behave less ethically than we would like.

thatbags Mon 07-Oct-13 06:58:41

deedaa's post shows why I think what I do, and that's just one example.
