If you think GN can get a little heated.....

.....you should read some of the expat forums. Most of the protagonists are men. The arguments are sometimes ridiculous. For example, one person says Britain is rubbish and life in France is perfect. Somebody else replies that their life in France has been disastrous and they can't wait to get back to Britain, which is wonderful. If I try mildly pointing out that both countries have their good and bad points, and you don't have to hate Britain to enjoy living in France, I get jumped on from both sides!
And the political arguments can get really vicious, with personal insults flying around.
I have fallen foul of one member who is an ex-policeman and gets very annoyed whenever I mention some news story about police corruption or incompetence, misogyny, homophobia or racism, even though I always point out that the majority of police officers are probably perfectly honest and fair. He always says the offences are only 'alleged' and goes very quiet when they are found to be true. As an ex-teacher, I just feel sad when stories appear about rogue teachers, but I don't take them as a personal insult. He also objects to my atheism and left-wing views. I have to enjoy that I quite enjoy jousting with him. If I couldn't take the heat, I would stay out of the kitchen! However, he has been responsible for several members leaving the forum, especially women.

I find Gransnet to be a haven of polite, kind, intelligent people, mostly women, with a scattering of some very nice men.

Angela Merkel is great!

Welcome, berdie, nice to have you on board. I have many lovely men in my family now - grandsons, grandsons-in-law, son-in-law - they have changed my mind about men! I am afraid many of the men I knew of my generation and older were taciturn, sexist and generally useless, and that includes my father, uncles, brother, husband, brothers-in-law and the husbands of most of my friends. There were honourable exceptions, of course, and I am sure all our GN men are amongst them!
I am not sure that the kind of woman who would rise to the top in politics would necessarily be an improvement on the kind of man who does, although Merkel seems O.K.

berdie, surely you can exempt yourself from your strictures on your fellow men. You are an asset to us on Gransnet. smile

Nice one berdiesmile

I agree Greatnan, Iv'e been on GN for nearly a week now, and I find myself laughing along with some of the antics of members. I also think that this country should be run by you ladies, because as someone said, a lot of men are full of testosterone, and have no idea how to treat people. So lets all respect each others views, disagree sometimes, but lets not start slagging each other off.smile

LizG Wed 09-Oct-13 08:30:22

hmm not quite the way I would have described it Greatnan but certainly interesting smile

'I find Gransnet to be a haven of polite, kind, intelligent people, mostly women, with a scattering of some very nice men.'
Worth repeating, I think! smile

j08 I do not mind what people think of me, never have, but it is interesting now and again to know how others perceive you. It also helps if you want to put your views across in a manner that you hope will convince other people.

I will also jump to your defence. I like your waspish interventions, and that is a single sided compliment, no underside. Oysters need grit to make pearls and a good discussion needs someone prepared to lob in the odd comment aimed at stirring things up.

Aka Wed 09-Oct-13 07:23:35

Exactly Ceesnan and I'm constantly subject to personal attacks by one particular person.

Ceesnan Wed 09-Oct-13 06:38:54

You said, when, that you 'hate personal attacks, jibes and insults'. If this is the case then your comments to Jingle are hypocritical in the extreme!

absent Tue 08-Oct-13 23:46:57

What? confused

Aka Tue 08-Oct-13 23:06:07

I can't believe what I am reading. Oh how 'holier than thou' and such hypocrisy from some!

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 23:06:05

moon

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 23:05:40

Keep telling 'em that. I should be alright then.

Ana Tue 08-Oct-13 23:03:40

Well, if we lose you, jingl, there's no hope for GN. Blandness will rule...sad

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 23:02:16

Sash! Lara is probably waiting in the wings. I am under Special Measures.

Ana Tue 08-Oct-13 23:02:08

That's so unfair, when. This thread hasn't been 'de-railed' at all - it's a continuing discussion about the content of the OP.

Sel Tue 08-Oct-13 23:00:12

j08 is entertaining.

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 22:59:01

Saintliness!!! sodding Fire!

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 22:58:07

What have I said now?! I simply complimented some posters on their sinfulness.

whenim64 Tue 08-Oct-13 22:55:50

Sad that threads have to be de-railed by Jingle's need to cause strife. The same old, boring pattern again and again, ad infinitum. Have you ever tried to curb it, Jingle? Do you actually GET anything out of being a Gransnet member? You don't appear to sad

glassortwo Tue 08-Oct-13 22:50:09

absent if you haven't got a sense of humour I will eat my hat.

j08 Tue 08-Oct-13 22:42:56

Why would anyone put much thought into this?

Absent, it's not so much what you lack

Ana Tue 08-Oct-13 22:40:11

(that was to absent)

Ana Tue 08-Oct-13 22:39:41

Hmm...
