...horrendous car crash near my house. I heard the most awful bang followed by a continuous car horn. I ran outside to see two cars completely smashed in a head on collision. Passersby were on phones, obviously calling the emergency services, so I ran further down the road and began to direct traffic away from the scene. Fifteen minutes later a policewoman arrived to tell me I was doing a brilliant job and asked me to continue until reinforcements could get there. She (kindly confused ) gave me a blue 'POLICE' sign to put in the middle of the road behind me and left me to it (for a further fifty minutes).....a few minutes later a distraught woman came rushing up to me crying, 'Where is my son....where is my son?' Horrible moment - the crash was just out of sight behind me. She was the mother of one of the drivers and was followed a short time later by a lad of about eighteen who ran sobbing up the road and into her arms. Now I've come indoors - the fire service are cutting one of the cars apart to get someone out.......I'm sitting here shaking. Poor family. sad

I've just been out to see if the mother (a slight acquaintance) and her other son want to wait in my house, but her son has been cut free now and they're off to the hospital. There are three police cars, two fire engines, one fire car and two ambulances outside my house.

I am so glad her son was alright. What a nightmare for all concerned. sad

Sounds like you were amazing ga. Well done.

j08 Mon 07-Oct-13 17:48:15

shock I did n' t realise two sons were involved. Hope the one they have cut out is not too bad. sad

j08 Mon 07-Oct-13 17:50:31

Fifty minutes?! Are they short of police people down there ?

Greatnan Mon 07-Oct-13 17:50:44

Well done, ga
Time for a well deserved cup of tea, or whatever you fancy.

grannyactivist Mon 07-Oct-13 18:00:13

Just had a cup of tea, but can't believe how affected I am. That poor mother and brother looked so anguished (dad is meeting them at the hospital). I don't know them well, but they are a Polish family who have really integrated and who have excellent English - the mum recommends other Polish people to me for English classes.
I need the Wonderful Man to come home soon so that I can burble about it for a while and get it out of my system - but he'll have a twenty minute detour because of the accident!

shysal Mon 07-Oct-13 18:13:47

Do you know how the other driver and any passengers are?
You were amazing ga!

You have clearly behaved with great sense and control in a crisis but it is hardly surprising that once the crisis is over, you feel shaky and probably tearful. Well done grannyactivist. I should have something stronger than tea if I were you. flowers

Galen Mon 07-Oct-13 18:16:11

Just the behaviour that gives us grans a good name! Well done!

Lona Mon 07-Oct-13 18:28:32

grannya You will be in shock for a while I would think, have a stiff drink and let it all out with TWM. Well done!

Gally Mon 07-Oct-13 18:43:05

Amazing GA. It's strange how, in a crisis, something just takes over and you get on with it almost on automatic. Only had to do it a couple of times, which was 2x too many. Hope you have had your medicinal shot by now...?

Nelliemoser Mon 07-Oct-13 18:47:13

GrannyA Do take care of yourself your shock might really kick in later.

kittylester Mon 07-Oct-13 18:53:12

Sit down and have a brew with a splah in it GA. you sound as though you did a great job. Afterwards is always difficult as we put ourselves in the place of the people affected, don't we? Hope the WM comes home soon to look after you. If he doesn't please burble away to us. flowers

LizG Mon 07-Oct-13 19:08:25

Well done grannyactivist very proud of you.

annodomini Mon 07-Oct-13 19:17:01

GA, you were so resourceful and it's sure to have taken a lot out of you. The police must have been very grateful to you. I hope there's good news about the young man who had to be cut out. brew then wine

Mishap Mon 07-Oct-13 19:20:31

Well done. I am sure that your involvement was invaluable. But it does take its toll and is very traumatic - you need a sit down to get your breath back.

harrigran Mon 07-Oct-13 23:37:46

Well done ga flowers

grannyactivist Mon 07-Oct-13 23:56:22

Thanks for your lovely understanding comments my friends. flowers
I think I'm in quite an emotionally fragile state at the moment (the brother in law saga continues) and that's why it affected me so badly. And of course Kitty is right, I did put myself in the place of the mother; my own sons are similar ages to hers. No further news about the casualties yet, but in a small town like this news gets around quite quickly so I'm sure I'll hear something soon. This town is usually a haven of peace and one of the safest places in the country to live, but just a week ago a holidaymaker was killed here by a local man in tragic circumstances. The community is still reeling from that. sad Anyway, I'm off to my bed soon and hoping that the week ahead will improve.

I didn't see this last night because I was out. I just want to add my praise for your quick thinking and helpfulness, ga. Well done. I hope you are feeling allright this morning and that the news from the hospital is not too bad.

MiceElf Tue 08-Oct-13 06:36:37

Ga I'm soimpressed by your quick thinking and the way took control, seeing the most important task which needed to be done and doing it.

No wonder you then felt the aftermath. I hope you were able to sleep last night and that the news this morning is a positive as possible.

Iam64 Tue 08-Oct-13 08:19:50

More respect and congratulations on acting so swiftly and courageously GActivist. Hope you slept as well as possible and that the news about those involved is as positive as it can be.
