Happy news!

You mean you don't feel like jumping on that plane, anno? You are a fair-weather friend! I would have to look up my last year's diary, but I think we had a couple of days in November, but then it disappeared.
My daughter suffers from Raynaud's Disease and her fingers turn white in cold weather - she is very happy in Nelson and cannot understand why I would choose to live in the Alps!

I now feel really cold, having read your post, Greatnan. Snow! It it early this year?

No, Shysal, my daughter and I both agree that it would be better all round if I had self-contained accommodation, but the two bedroomed flat does have a living room, kitchen, bathroom and private entrance and it is at the other end of the house from the family part. I don't intend to emigrate until I am 75, by which time the two remaining grandchildren will have left home. Until then, I will continue to spend about six or seven weeks each year with them, in their guest bedroom. My son-in-law is very kind and always makes me very welcome. It must be hard for him, because his own mother is in a care home in England in an advanced state of dementia. She is only a year older than me, and one of the kindest people I have ever met. Life can be very unfair, can't it?

Does this mean you will be sharing their house, or are you still planning a dwelling on their land?

Thank you - no yomping today, as I woke to a beautiful white world and it is still snowing heavily. There is a foot of snow on my car so I am glad I had my flu jab yesterday and stocked up with food
The gleam of the snow was my only light as there was a power cut, but by the time I had set up my camping-gaz stove and made a cup of tea, it was back on
No TV though - the satellite dish on the roof is covered by snow,but I can listen to Radio 4 on-line, and I have lots of books waiting to be read, and a 1,000 piece jig saw half finished.
If I go very quiet today, blame EDF - the electricity is still flickering, and every time it does, I have to restart my laptop!

Great news greatnan - thanks for posting it. I'm having my first cup of coffee of they day and feeling happy for you and your lovely family. You are such a pioneer of our generation - working full time with children, divorce, setting up independently, changing career direction, living in different parts of the UK and Europe, and now off to a new life in New Zealand. Great role model for other (possibly younger) women. I'm working this morning, so no long walk for me till later in the day. I imagine you are already out yomping in the mountains, enjoy your day.

What a smashing bunch you are - Lara was right when she said so in her interview after winning the Love Story competition! I agree, ga, when I have posted about my other daughter's problems, I have had so much sympathy and now so many of you have taken the trouble to share my happiness.
I have tried to post this a couple of times, so if it comes up in duplicate, please blame the tech guys!

I think Gransnet is wonderful when we need support, encouragement, or a bit of 'tough love', but without the humour and 'good news' stories it would be heavy going. So thanks for sharing this Greatnan, I've enjoyed hearing about your family in NZ and it's encouraging to hear how we'll they're doing. My daughter in NZ isn't saying so, but I suspect she's missing family quite a lot.
