THE SENSITIVITY OF SENIORS
This letter was sent to the Lions Bay School Principal's office in West Vancouver after the school had sponsored a luncheon for seniors. An elderly lady received a new radio at the lunch as a door raffle prize and was writing to say thank you.

This story is a credit to all humankind. Forward this to anyone you know who might need a lift today...

Dear Lions Bay School:
God bless you for the beautiful radio I won at your recent Senior Citizens luncheon.
I am 89 years old and live at the West Vancouver Home for the Aged.
All of my family has passed away so I am all alone.

I want to thank you for the kindness you have shown to a forgotten old lady.
My roommate is 95 and has always had her own radio. She would never let me listen to it.
She said it belonged to her long dead husband, and understandably, wanted to keep it safe.

The other day her radio fell off the nightstand and broke into a dozen pieces.
It was awful and she was in tears.
Later, she asked if she could listen to mine, and I was overjoyed that I could tell her to fuck off.

Thank you for that wonderful opportunity.
God bless you all.

Sincerely,
Margaret.

Well, please send her my love...

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 20:55:19

No! I'm afraid she has gone!
Some of us are still in private contact with her.

Tegan Mon 21-Oct-13 20:52:25

I thought she was on holiday as well. She's been very kind to me and helped me when I was in a spot of bother about something a while back.

dustyangel Mon 21-Oct-13 20:36:52

I'm sorry to hear Greatnan has left. I enjoyed her posts and presumed she was on holiday.

absent Mon 21-Oct-13 20:00:12

She left of her own accord.

Bez Mon 21-Oct-13 19:41:00

Is she maybe on holiday? I hope that is the case.

Aka Mon 21-Oct-13 19:39:44

Did she jump or was she pushed?

absent Mon 21-Oct-13 19:07:49

Ceesnan Just over a week ago.

Now she is a poster whose perspicacity and intelligence I miss on the forums.

merlotgran Mon 21-Oct-13 19:05:39

I've been wondering about greatnan as well.

bluebell Mon 21-Oct-13 19:03:56

Stiff and stuffy - did you ever read any of the jokes she posted? I found some of them really made me blush and others laugh out loud. She had a lot of life experiences - some of them very sad. I think that was quite an unfair remark apricot

Ceesnan Mon 21-Oct-13 19:00:06

I hadn't realised that greatnan had gone. When did she go?

absent Mon 21-Oct-13 18:52:28

Just because Greatnan has gone, doesn't mean we can't have a thread dedicated to jokes. I think the two that she started and kept going for such a long time were very popular.

Gransnet used to be so stiff and stuffy that I moved to Mumsnet. I am so so happy to read this very funny joke and will stay around. Thanks nanapug!

Brilliant joke nanapug.

Standard and well tried and tested joke formula - set up a scene and then turn it on its head. I loved it!

My father and DH used to think that Tommy Cooper was hilarious.
My mother and I could never see why!

Tegan Sun 20-Oct-13 21:50:51

For some reason it makes me think of the granny in the Giles cartoons.

simtib Sun 20-Oct-13 21:47:25

absent the humour is the sudden switch from sweet little old lady that you think will share her radio to nasty old lady that has been waiting years to get her own back. It is the surprise ending type of humour, but obviously not to every ones taste.

'no no not the comfy chair'

Having a good sense of humour is an asset. For those who don't have one, don't knock it in others. My ex partner had no sense of humour and no empathy either. Life wasn't a lot of fun with a misery guts.

Charleygirl Sun 20-Oct-13 20:38:48

definitely not funny- it has to be a joke

nanapug Sun 20-Oct-13 20:35:06

Neither did I absent, but nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.....

Tegan Sun 20-Oct-13 20:21:22

Very personal thing, humour. On Sunday nights I sit and watch The Geordie, The Scot and The Geek and cry with laughter and the S.O. looks at me in amazement [he doesn't get South Park either and I'd never even attempt to show him The Mighty Boosh]. But we both laugh at Dad's Army.

Nanapug , good , really really good .

nanapug Of course I didn't say anything about not posting something that you thought was humorous. I was curious about why people thought that such egregious behaviour funny. The answer was, as I suggested myself, the classic disappointment of expectation but regardless of context. It's like laughing when someone says something embarrassing or farts in public. Of course, any gransnetter is entitled to post something he/she considers amusing and any other gransnetter is entitled to laugh. Equally, I am entitled to ask why. Do spare your pity – it isn't required.

I did say that none of this was worth bothering about. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition…
