When should we start wearing poppies?

I've just seen a BBC newsreader wearing a poppy. I know the act of remembrance is very important but is this not just a little too soon? We're still a few days away from November which, to my mind, is the month of remembrance.

I bought two yesterday just because I saw them. Lost them already. confused

I bought a metal pin one today as the seller was doing the rounds of the venue I was at. I thought it would be more secure (not wearing it yet) Then I realised as it is smaller than a 5p will people even notice I'm wearing it !!

I think 1st weekend November is soon enough.

I bought my RBL wristband from ebay last month, but not wearing it yet. I think I shall wait until November 1st.

I saw three people last Sunday on Countryfile wearing poppies. Two of them were presenters.
It's getting ridiculous.

Yes - one-upmanship at its worst...hmm

They were on sale in Sainsburys today. I think it is too early, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one but nearer the date of the Armistice Anniversary. I would either lose it or it would be so tatty after being moved from coat to coat, and I am not mean ,I give a meaningful amount of money.

As soon as they are on sale, not sure that one-upmanship will have been in the minds of those presenters!

Possibly in the minds of the TV company concerned, though...

I live in Colchester, a garrison town, and there have been high profile Poppy Appeal launch events this weekend. I am proud to wear my Poppy and if it gets tatty I buy another!

I have been in the Metro centre today and have bought poppy's for DH and I from a lovely Lady, and we have worn them, but DH has lost his already.

Is it ever too early to support our service men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day.

Support our Troops its never too early!!! Every penny counts!

Well said glassortwo

Well said glassortwo.
If we think why we wear poppies, the loss of so many lives, the suffering and the headache the whole idea that the last week in October seems a little to soon to wear poppies is quite simply crazy. What does it matter.
Wear your poppy with pride. If you lose it between now and Armistice day go and buy another. smile

I buy one. I wear it on November 11th. It really is that simple. As long as I have bought one, it is no-one else's business when I choose to wear it.

We have a lot of new Gransnetters, so I should explain that my son in law was killed in Afghanistan whilst serving with HM Forces. I buy my poppy and wear it from the day of the Poppy Appeal Launch. The RBL gave our daughter invaluable help when she needed it and their resources have been severely stretched by the aftermath of recent conflicts, so I'm happy to support their fundraising efforts.

Granny23 Sun 27-Oct-13 03:00:15

I prefer to wear a white 'peace' poppy but always donate to the Poppy appeal too.

Grannyactivist, thanks for the reminder about your loss. I wear a poppy from the time they go on sale. It's hard to believe it's almost 100 years since the first world war, and that those who fought in the 2nd are reducing in numbers. I despair of recent wars, but I wouldn't want those feelings to get in the way of supporting the brave young men and women involved in them.

FlicketyB Sun 27-Oct-13 07:49:53

I think a week before 11 November and not after is quite sufficient. We can remember without parading around with poppies in our lapels.

ps Sun 27-Oct-13 08:38:03

I agree a week before and not after but I also have no problem with those that feel they wish to wear theirs earlier. I bought mine yesterday, two regular for jacket and overcoat/raincoat and a small metal pin badge for tie. I will not wear them until next Saturday however. It seems every presenter on TV is wearing one now so it may be a directive from upon high perhaps to create awareness.

Agus Sun 27-Oct-13 08:43:44

Granny23. I like the idea of the white peace poppy. I'll look out for them.

Marelli Sun 27-Oct-13 09:10:10

I buy one for DH and me as soon as they're for sale. They do get a bit tatty after a few days, or they fall off, so I just buy another one.
War after war has killed millions of young men and women in the name of greed, power and religion. The War Cemeteries in Belgium and France testify to this. It makes no difference when we wear them as long as we put money to the cause.

glammanana Sun 27-Oct-13 09:37:53

glass so well said about it never being too early to wear your poppy,I buy ours from British Legion the first day of the appeal starts,I buy a cross to be placed at our Local Memeorial to remember the friends my DS1 & DS2 lost in Irag and Afganistan the BL does the most amazing job of helping those who have lost loved ones in any of the conflicts they have been involved with.

Anniebach Sun 27-Oct-13 09:47:38

The red poppy seems to be losing it's true meaning, it certaintly doesn't seem to be representing remembrance. It has become a political tool for many and a symbol of 'Britishness' for some.

If a politician came on telly any time from today untill 10th November without a poppy he/she would be slaughtered by the media and much of the public

I wear a red and a white on the eleventh and not before

annodomini Sun 27-Oct-13 09:54:38

I haven't got one yet, but no doubt they will be selling them when I go shopping. I always buy two because I invariably manage to lose one. Remembrance Sunday is two weeks today, so probably not too soon to wear one.

dorsetpennt Sun 27-Oct-13 10:03:20

I wear mine with pride.
