I thought it would be a good idea to open a thread where those of us who are upset by this news can comfort each other. Better to share thoughts here and leave the IMPORTANT thread for on-going efforts to find her.

The FO has been contacted already, and on the other thread - the one for suggestions - you'll find out exactly what is going on. But thank you, and we'll use every bit of advice and every idea, because it might be the one thing that gets things moving!

Mumsnetters are busy too.

Please action is needed. Can everone send an email to this address so they take notice, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10631033. I'm trying to find similar for ITV but it;'s never easy & I don't use twitter. I'm pushing th e view that they are interested in GN/MN when there's a frivolous story so can they do this really serious one which shows the good side of our networks. The French police take th eview that any adult has th eright to go missing even though all the signs of this are out of character so we really need to push now.
I've used this piece that someone wrote: Carol Sheridan MIssing, Anxiety is mounting over the whereabouts of Carol Sheridan (73), a native of Salford, who now lives in the Rhone-Alpes area of Haute Savoie in the French Alps. Carol enjoys walking in the hills and forests that surround her home. She was last seen on the afternoon of Sunday 27th October, leaving in her black Fiat Panda 4x4, presumably for her daily walk. Her friends and family have been seeking support and assistance using social media, Facebook and Twitter. Offers have been pouring in from all over France and the wider world. Fellow members of Gransnet (Internet Forum for grandparents) have been instrumental in spreading the word about Carol's disappearance. They are increasingly disturbed by the lack of news and the failure to find the car in which she was travelling.
Carol's family are distraught. Her daughter, Fiona, who lives in New Zealand, has been orchestrating contacts with the French Police via the embassy in Wellington; the charity Missing Persons Abroad https://www.google.co.uk/search... has also liaised with the Police, urging them to expedite the search. Local organisations in her locality are organising search parties. Local media have been alerted and posters widely distributed.

Please refer to https://www.facebook.com/carolsheridanmissing?fref=ts for information and copy of poster.

lona same thought!

Nelliemoser Thu 31-Oct-13 11:06:45

It hurts me to say this but how about contacting the Daily Mail to report that the French attitude appears to imply they CBA to look for "our British pensioner."

On second thought its better to get the foreign office to liase . we don't want probably should'nt alienate the French just yet.
Are you in the UK greatgranddaughter ? If so try your MP they might like to earn a few brownie points.

Lona Thu 31-Oct-13 10:58:46

Surely this would now be of more interest to the UK media.
It gives them an opportunity to criticise the French for not helping.

Fgs she is 73!

Flowerofthewest Thu 31-Oct-13 10:46:43

If this was in the UK I am certain the authorities would take it seriously. Shame on the French Police.angry

Nelliemoser Thu 31-Oct-13 10:44:38

great granddaughter That is dreadful, she is over 70. She would hate to hear this but she is more vulnerable than much younger people because of her age.

merlotgran Thu 31-Oct-13 10:41:06

This is appalling, GreatGrandaughter, Words fail me. angry

It makes you wonder if the French police would be more concerned if a tourist had gone missing and not an ex-pat. They wouldn't want their tourist industry damaged would they?

So sorry for the stress you are all suffering at the moment and can only hope and pray for good news soon.

Flowerofthewest Thu 31-Oct-13 10:40:48

am bumping my FB page all the time. I cannot believe that it is not seen as important by the French authorities.

GreatGranddaughter Thu 31-Oct-13 10:36:01

UPDATE:
Just received a call from the foreign office who have been in contact with the local police.
Having been advised by several charities to remain put as there is little we can do from France that we couldn't do from home (particularly as we are not fluent French-speakers), the French police have now suggested that if we want them to begin a search party for my Nan we should be over there doing it ourselves.
Unfortunately they maintain that a crime has not been committed and that if a person wishes to disappear they have every right to do so.
After much talking the foreign office is going to contact them again and stress how vulnerable Carol is and how unusual this behaviour is.
Their lack of urgency in this matter is of course adding to our stress, but we will persist with it & keep you all updated.
Please continue with your efforts to raise awareness in the local community & get everyone looking for her car!

There's a link to the BBC website on the other thread. I've emailed them the missing poster. Lets swamp their website with requests for help to find our friend.

Tegan Thu 31-Oct-13 10:06:11

I've emailed AOL telling them about the forum and briefly saying what has happened. I hope no one minds me doing this; I'm having to go out shortly.

merlotgran Thu 31-Oct-13 10:05:41

Just logged on to see if there is any news. It's amazing how much is being attempted by cyber friends to try to help greatnan's family find her.

I do hope they soon have news of the car. I've been thinking from the start that this might not be a walking but a driving accident. My thoughts are with Carol's family in NZ and England.

I have shared information on fb but I wish there was more I could do to help.

Tegan Thu 31-Oct-13 09:57:22

What about our broadband suppliers? On AOL news items pop up as soon as I turn the computer on.

annodomini Thu 31-Oct-13 09:53:43

Do we have any Gransnetters who are or have been involved in public relations? If so, your advice could be invaluable. PM me, please if you know your way around PR.

Agus Thu 31-Oct-13 09:43:26

Stay strong Lara. Your Nan is a very strong resourceful woman. Love to all your family .

whenim64 Thu 31-Oct-13 09:23:11

There's a thread on Mumsnet, too, and a few helpful suggestions have been made with loads of support. Please keep bumping it to keep the momentum going, if you are a Mumsnet member.

NannaB Thu 31-Oct-13 09:08:11

Just logged into Gransnet having not been on for months. Really shocked to hear that Greatnan is missing - let's hope she is found soon, safe and well. Good luck to all those looking for her and heartfelt wishes to her family. X

Oldgreymare Thu 31-Oct-13 09:06:37

Waiting for news is difficult for us GNs, I simply cannot imagine how it is for greatnan's family.
Much love and strengh to you all, and especially to greatnan herself.

whenim64 Thu 31-Oct-13 09:00:54

Morning, everyone. Granny23 helpfully started this 'Greatnan Missing' thread so we could share concerns, support each other and express how we're feeling, in order that we can leave the 'IMPORTANT Greatnan Missing' thread clear for updates and anything that will help Lara and her family move things along in the search for Carol.

Could you go back to that arrangement, please, so we can quickly scan the IMPORTANT Missing thread for ideas and suggestions, respond to questions and provide links to other significant organisations and individuals involved in trying to locate Carol and her car? Many thanks.

annodomini Thu 31-Oct-13 08:49:12

Hi Lara, Ann here. Yes, I can confirm that's exactly the same kind of car. How often have I sat in the passenger seat! Your Greatnan is so proud of you and has spoken of you so often that I feel I know you. Surely there must be news today. With love and hope. x x x

Iam64 Thu 31-Oct-13 08:41:25

Lara - you can see from the threads about your nan just how much she means to her friends on gransnet. We're all thinking of her, and her family

Sewsilver Thu 31-Oct-13 08:38:29

Lara this must be utterly dreadful for you and the family. Thinking of you and hoping there is news soon.

Flowerofthewest Thu 31-Oct-13 08:23:05

Thank you Lara - have already shared the car poster. Let's hope this brings results. Thinking of you all.

glammanana Thu 31-Oct-13 08:11:36
