I started to make some flapjack this morning. Butter melting, sugar weighed, nuts and seeds ground, tin lined with baking parchment, oven heating up...

...no oats

all is on hold.

My oldest grandaughter who is 21 is on holiday in South America with two friends, I've just seen some lovely photos on FB of the three of them in Bolivia, dressed up in national costume. She says they have stayed in an hotel made of salt!.
So proud of her.She graduated from Uni with a Maths and Economics degree last summer after going to what is classed as a ''sink'' comprehensive. She also paid for her holiday from her earnings doing bar work. Now she has to get a job!

Oh Brenda I would have been just as scared!

I so commiserate about the pots - not DH as he does not usually cook (thank goodness) but Sil is dreadful and leaves the work tops in a state. When he cooks at home I just leave the pans etc but if at my house I always announce early on in the proceedings that I expect him to clear up too.

We are in USA visiting DS and family at the moment. We have now been out twice for a meal and both times I have chosen a salad --and both times I have had to have a box to bring home about a third of the salad etc plus the bread/pitta served with the meal. DH struggled with his meal today too.
I do however think that the portions are slightly smaller than they were when we first came about 15 years ago. grin

Last night I was babysitting at my DD 19 miles through country roads from my home. I have never been as s**t scared as I was driving home. Torrential rain, leaves, branches and the world supply of acorns on the roads coupled with across road puddles it was a white knuckled ride. Was I glad to see my home!

I am now liking my lips, that sounds really delicious smile

Grannyknot Mon 04-Nov-13 19:29:49

Me too newist.

I made a delicious meal tonight, fed 3 of us (2 big hulking men) for about 6 quid - cooked penne pasta, honey and soy smoked mackerel x 2 fillets, cheese sauce with a big teaspoon of Dijon mustard in, all stirred in to the big pan of sauteed leeks I had prepared. Added half a bag of spinach leaves, stirred it in, tipped into a dish. Grated cheese and breadcrumbs on top, 25 mins in the oven. I'm still licking my chops.

We always used to be hugely amused when our staid spinster Maths teacher talked about vulgar fractions. Easily amused in those days!
My MIL who was a very ladylike Miss Marple type used to express a preference for Coarse Cut marmalade and would be teased for buying this "thoroughly vulgar" marmalade.
Words - such larks!

JessM Sat 02-Nov-13 20:22:00

rather than sleek, sophisticated decimal fractions grin

thatbags Sat 02-Nov-13 19:28:22

Yes. Vulgar means common or ordinary.

Galen Sat 02-Nov-13 18:10:12

Is it vulgar as in common?

JessM Sat 02-Nov-13 18:04:39

grannyknot thats as bad as the time I convinced myself that I had left my shopping in the trolley. DH went back to Sainsbury's , enquired, re-shopped and then found the shopping in the boot. No handsome strangers involved though. They are few and far between I find.

JessM Sat 02-Nov-13 18:02:33

Do we want to galen? Just before tea?
I have just been wondering (along with my DH, who is doing his maths homework) why a Vulgar Fraction is called vulgar? My only thought was that decimal fractions are so much more elegant, mathematically speaking. Anyone know the answer because wikipedia doesn't.

Grannyknot Sat 02-Nov-13 18:00:59

that doesn't make sense, "saw me struggling" belongs with "handsome older man"! <kicks self again> smile

Grannyknot Sat 02-Nov-13 17:59:55

I almost posted this under "Am I going mad?" Just been to the supermarket with my own carrier bags, including one of my favourite ones (because it's shallow/not deep saw me struggling and said - unobtainable in the UK!) Put the bags in a trolley, put the pound in to release trolley, trolley had gammy wheel, handsome older man about to leave his trolley in the trolley park area said "Here have this one for free". I was so delighted/distracted, promptly left all my bags in the first trolley - and they got nicked!

I can't 'fess up to my stupidity anywhere else ... :P

OGM what has got into my iPad today?

Galen Sat 02-Nov-13 17:51:41

Sadly those scientists are definitely wrong Sunseeker

Sook Sat 02-Nov-13 17:47:26

sunseeker grin it's not true I'm a confirmed chocoholic and distinctly tubby around my middle.

Oldgreymare Sat 02-Nov-13 17:10:02

Oh dear. My No.1 son reacted in much the same way. At two and a half, he came up with what in his mind must have been the best reason:
'Send it back, it swears!'

Galen Sat 02-Nov-13 17:05:18

I'm going up to play with toddler and try to distract her. Her nose is definitely out of joint and she's grumpy.

Oldgreymare Sat 02-Nov-13 16:43:45

Galen smile

Last week I received a letter telling me that the phone provider of my land line had been taken over by a different provider. Nobody asked me if I wanted to be taken over. The letter gave me the account username and told me the password for security reasons will follow in 7 days, so far so good, last night we had an unexpected thunder clap which caused a power cut resulting in my landline not working and screeching at me when trying to use it. This morning I had to put lots of money into my mobile so that I could ring the new provider to tell them my problem, having been put on hold many times explaining countless times I did not have a password. I am not convinced all of these devices are making my life easier confused

Galen Sat 02-Nov-13 11:48:41

Ogm be very careful. Rhinos get hunted for their horns!
Yes I have books in bathrooms and toilets! That's how I learnt the facts of life. There was a copy of obst and gynae!
