On the sensuousness of wrapping up warmly

We have many serious and practical discussions on keeping warm, house insulation and carbon cutting. I thought it was time we had a thread on the sensuousness of warm clothes.

I am not a summer person. the first signs of autumn make my heart sing and I cannot wait to get my winter clothes out of storage, but on a really cold day the sensuous warmth in the light fluffiness of a thermal vest or the comfort of light looped thermal socks that wrap your feet in warmth like a shawl is cannot be beaten.

I recently bought a sweater in Sainsburies, multi coloured in shades of autumn and pinks. It has a loose knit and a cowl collar. It makes me feel warm just to look at it and it is deliciously warm when worn. I also have a magnificent wool sweater I bought in Iceland, its warmth is overwhelming unless temperatures outside are below zero and you are outside too, but in those conditions it keeps me so warm and to be outside in a cold wind yet aware how warm you are is a fabulous feeling.

positivepam hi, it may well be the Morphine making you feel cold. I'm on a low maintenence dose of Oxycontin (bone pain from breast cancer secondaries) and have wildly fluctuating body temperature.

positivepam Sun 03-Nov-13 16:16:37

Thanks penguinpaperback I think you are right, I just put the fire on and I am boiling now ha ha!! Oh the joy of pain, I am on quite a high dose of slow release at the moment plus the liquid stuff and the strong co-codamol. It is funny because DH has always been the cold one and now we have totally swapped! I am hoping to reduce considerably all this stuff as soon as possible, but for now, the fire it is. grin

Layers are indeed the answer for those with an unsteady thermostat - whether the cause is hormonal or pharmacological.
Gosh penguinpaperback the only time I have heard about that drug was on a programme re it being a big illegal problem in the far north of Canada. I hope that your condition is stabilised.
It is 8 C here and Snowdon has its first sprinkling of snow on its summit. A chilly wind as well but a lovely sunshine and shade afternoon. DH came out in his shorts and claimed not to be cold.
I love my merino tops, some short sleeved from Gap, some from NZ. In the winter I normally wear 2 layers on my legs outdoors (e.g leggings and trousers) and that really helps me to stay cosy. Why is it do you think that hot flushes are an above the waist phenomenon?

For janeainsworth.

Stayed on a sheep farm in the lakes some years ago and was told that Herdwick wool was hard wearing and used in carpets. I haven't tried Eucalan myself but hope it works, your sweater should last for ages.

Galen - "Iceland" as in "Mum's gone to Iceland" grin

penguinpaperback Sun 03-Nov-13 16:35:34

Hi JessM I'm ok at the moment, thank you. flowers It took a bit of getting used to but it's a small dose and I'm pain free.

Lots of thin layers for me, when I have to. I can, unfortunately, imagine myself in a padded coat only too well, and Michelin Man comes to mind!

I like warm weather, not too hot, not cold, and not too wet. Good job the weather wasn't a factor in choosing to live here...

Aka Sun 03-Nov-13 18:02:38

I hate winter. I detest dark mornings and early nights. Cold, wet, windy weather depresses me. I look 10lbs fatter in winter clothes. My skin gets pale, I get hungry all the time. My fuel bill goes through the roof. The dogs come back from walks with muddy paws. The grandchildren get stir crazy if i can't take them out. Colds and viruses run rampant. Christmas is a fat fest and a money eater. I hate turkey. January and February are miserable months and I can't stand Autumn Watch and Bruce Forsyth.

I JUST WANT TO HIBERNATE sad

gracesmum Sun 03-Nov-13 18:17:49

Hmm, not too keen on it then Aka?? [hmm
Remember Thomas Hood's "November"? It would jsut about sum up your sentiments. smile
I do agree about Jan and Feb though - you get through Christmas and think the next thing is Spring - but it isn't, not by a long chalk!

positivepam Sun 03-Nov-13 18:21:24

So you are a glass half full girl then Aka grin I know what you mean though, although I have a job getting one of my dogs out if it rains, lots of muddy paws! I don't like the dark mornings and evenings either. Erh come to think of it, I just like the clothes.

Aka Sun 03-Nov-13 18:23:21

Winter wise my glass needs to be Full to the Brim just to survive PP

Aka Sun 03-Nov-13 18:25:16

November

No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -
No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day.
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member -
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -
November!

Thomas Hood

Yes, just so and December, January, February.... any more poems please Grace ?

Having spent the first 60 years of my life hating coats, I now have an addition to all sorts of outerwear. What's that all about confused

Furry Bear
By A. A. Milne

If I were a bear
And a big bear too,
I shouldn't much care
If it froze or snew;
I shouldn't much mind
If it snowed or friz-
I'd be all fur-lined
With a coat like his!

For I'd have fur boots
And a brown fur wrap,
And brown knickers
And a big fur cap.
I'd have a fur muffle-ruff.
To cover my jaws,
And brown fur mittens
On my big brown paws.
With a big brown furry-down
Up to my head,
I'd sleep all the winter
In a big fur bed.

I wish I was a bear...

gracesmum Sun 03-Nov-13 18:28:51

I love that poem!! It's the antithesis to all those "Season of mists" blah blah Autumn things and I'm sure if he could have got a rhyme for February he'd have written one about that too!

gracesmum Sun 03-Nov-13 18:34:18

My reply above was to "November", but I do like the A.A Milne too.
In keeping with the general mood how about a bit of Flanders and Swan?

January brings the snow,
Makes your feet and fingers glow.
February's ice and sleet
Freeze the toes tight off your feet.
Welcome March with wintry wind
Would thou wert not so unkind!
April brings the sweet spring showers,
On and on for hours and hours.
Farmers fear unkindly May
Frost by night and hail by day.
June just rains and never stops
Thirty days and spoils the crops.
In July the sun is hot.
Is it shining? No, it's not.
August, cold and dank and wet,
Brings more rain than any yet.
Bleak September's mist and mud
Is enough to chill the blood.
Then October adds a gale,
Wind and slush and rain and hail.
Dark November brings the fog
Should not do it to a dog.
Freezing wet December, then

Bloody January again!

Enviousamerican Sun 03-Nov-13 18:58:03

positivepam Sun 03-Nov-13 19:10:42

Aka and gracesmum grin Brilliant, I love them.

storynanny Mon 04-Nov-13 01:01:52

I love the Autumn, is it becauseI was born late September? Do any of you love the season you were born in most of all?
Shysal, im with you on the bedclothes. We have a one tog duvet in summer and a 3 tog in Winter. Doesnt help with the menopausal-sleep though!

Granny23 Mon 04-Nov-13 02:23:19

I was a September baby too and the autumn is my favourite season. I feel that September is the time for fresh starts, school, college, clubs, jobs all tend to start or restart in September. I was always given new, warmer clothes for my Birthday and still like to have some new additions to the wardrobe at that time. I am not particularly fond of Winter but absolutely loathe Spring - a very disappointing season with the odd, encouraging blink of sun rapidly overtaken by rain, rain, sleet and more rain.

I am very fond of the comfort of a vest tucked into full sized briefs, knee high socks, trousers and jumper. Think it reminds me of my childhood smile

LizG Mon 04-Nov-13 03:27:00

Just to be plain difficult I was born in September and dislike Summer (too hot) and loathe Autumn and Winter (time to hibernate). I love Spring which is a time of new beginnings. I feel sure Spring is getting shorter though as the other two months encroach upon it sad

Kate13 Mon 04-Nov-13 04:17:19

I was born in March in Lancashire and didn't see the sun till I was 17 grin
