When my freezer failed I phoned to ask about claiming on my insurance, and told the girl at the other end of the line that there was a ,lot of home-made stuff, which was difficult to price. She advised me to make educated guesses, which would be accepted if the total was reasonable for the size of freezer. Even so, by the time I had paid the excess I got nowhere near enough to totally restock.

Anno - I just put lots of 'Lasagne for 4 - say £6.50' x 4 etc but I did include some steaks, chops etc as I did actually have some. I was so incensed that they wanted the cost of every single thing in there just to pay out about £75

Yes, it did include scaffolding.
I now have another builder coming to estimate tomorrow....

Good morning here still - dry but grey looking. Mentioned price of your gutters to DH Allie he said it would have something to do with the fact that they would probably need to have scaffolding erected and that is very expensive - all sorts of laws now about going up over a certain height not allowed on just a ladder. I had trouble with window cleaners in our last house because of that - had a dreadful job doing a couple of them from the inside!

Oh dear bags - been there, done that, didn't like it much.
I had no problems at all with any of my sons - but teenage daughters.........uh oh! Count to ten and breathe, count to ten and breathe, count to ten and breathe........ Choose whatever helps.

Morning Afternoon all. I was feeling worn out by eight o'clock this morning – teenager in the house syndrome. Still managed to mop out a problem gutter though. This job involved a mop (obv!), mop bucket, pallet base (so the 'tin can' woodshed roof would take my weight), ladder + plus trek up hill to get it from behind the archery target boss (have asked mrbags to bring it back down in future, please ), plastic brush and dustpan, hose, waterproof troosers, moving ladder to this end and that end of said gutter...

...yeah well, yous'll be getting the idea by now. Feeling satisfied with my determination at getting the job done. Now cranking up more determination and gritting teeth in readiness for this evening's inevitable teenager episode (warnings were disregarded; it won't be with impunity).

Help me gird my loins, please, gransnetters!

Thanks Jess - I have copied a list of 9 builders some of whom will be possible. Will look at websites next.

Yes allie in some boroughs the trading standards dept has a list of approved traders e.g www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/buy-confidence
Also sometimes local U3As can be a source of recommendations.
Also local letting agents can be a very good source of recommendations - they will have some people they use regularly at a good rate and if you say "I got your number from XX letting agents" they will be a bit more careful (because they don't want to lose the steady work from the letting agent)

Got a quote for gutter repairs for £3,350 just now.
I've got to the point of thinking make it 3K and you can have the job
....but it's a lot....

The other builder just came and didn't even measure, so i know he doesn't want it. Same with the one who started on 5K.
But the one who disappeared because of too much work, said under £1500.
Oh. Maybe that's why he's so busy!

Gosh, it's lunch time already! After a wonderful family weekend, I have just managed to get the sheets off the beds and in the wash. Then collapsed with coffee and cross word. Now girding up to face the Hoover. Is it just me that gets so knackered after only three days with toddlers? I brought up three full time for goodness sake!

Phone call from DD 8.30 this morning. The washing machine in her rented house has died. 'Can I come and do my washing mum' Wonder how long it's going to take the agents to sort that

Well it rained here at 11am for the Armistice ceremony, but seems to be sunny in Paris. I was trying to watch the ceremony at the Menin Gate, which was surely at 11am here? Perhaps they are delaying showing it until 11am in England?

A similar thing happened to me a few years back kittylester and printmiss. We had a major electrical fault in the street which resulted in no power for over 48 hours. I tried to claim on insurance and was told we had a £200 excess. I was very honest with my list of what we had in the freezer (fishfingers, mince, lasagne, ice cream etc) and as a result got nothing at all!

Dreich here in Central Scotland.. Waited 3 weeks for roofers who arrived at 8.30 only to tell me it was too wet to repair the roof! Sweary word, sweary word.

What did you do, Kitty? I hope that never happens to me, when I think of some of the junk in my freezer!

Last time my freezer died Printmiss, they wanted me to list exactly what was in it and the cost. DH had taken all the stuff to the dump in black bags. Considering that I'd made most of it myself (lasagnes, shepherd's pies, chillis, casseroles etc) that was nigh on impossible. My butcher offered to do me a receipt for a freezer full of frozen fillet steak but I didn't take him up on it - though I was sorely tempted.

Yuk, it's the kind of weather that gets right into my joints.
