Trapped in a virtual world

I have just taken the plunge and joined Facebook. Up until now Gransnet was my only virtual world. As I still have so many friends and family members in the UK, it seemed a good idea – not that I have really got the hang of it yet. What I hadn't anticipated was contact from friends and family elsewhere in the world, people I haven't been in touch with for a very long time and, in some cases, never. It's all rather exciting – and a bit terrifying.

I was thinking about this the other day, and wondered if it is our substitute for the variety of faces and gossip we would have had if we had had to do all of our shopping every day at a myriad of small local shops, as our parents did. I see friends a couple of times a week, talk to my DCs most day via facebook, see DH every day but he often gets up early and goes to bed early - and I hate the thought of being glued to tv shows all day. I love being able to dip into chats, obtain knowledge and news, and I have made some very good real life friends from it which would have been difficult in real life, because we keep on moving and live in the sticks. As an addiction, it is one I am very happy to have acquired. grin I think there was a survey a while ago where women were asked what would they rescue from a fire, and they answered, their computer!

Just what I was thinking; I must have an internet free day so I actually 'do' things. Went on a walk today but couldn't wait to get back and see what was happening on here. If I ever learn how to do Facebook I'll be beyond help.

All I can add is have you tried Candy Crush Saga on FB? Then you might as well give up real life altogether! grin

And you know what? I really wouldn't be without this virtual world! Mostly.

I've been feeling a bit square eyed from all the time I spend staring at various screens, so promised myself over the weekend to do less of it.

So I decided to:

Knit something (and looked for a pattern online)

Refreshed the Gransnet page (repeat after each following sentence)

Bake (and looked for a recipe online)

Buy something that was out of stock in the shop (you guessed it).

Help husband with the crossword (and out came the tablet).

Write to my old auntie (she's on email now).

Enter a competition - online.

Booked movie tickets ...er, switch on the hibernating laptop again

Go for a walk - thank you Google maps.

Thought about reporting this, where? Gransnet of course.

Yikes! How will I ever escape this virtual world?
