An internet friend sent me this over Christmas......... tchsmile

The computer swallowed Grandpa,
Yes, honestly it’s true!
He pressed 'control and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.
It devoured him completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
He must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.
I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.
In desperation, I asked Mr. Google
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'
So, if inside your 'Inbox,'
My Grandpa you should see,
Please 'Copy, Scan' and 'Paste' him,
And send him back to me.

This is a tribute to all the Grandpas & Grandmas who have been fearless
and learned to use the Computer.........

They are the greatest!!!

Everyone's sense of humour is different, Nelliemoser.

Nelliemoser Mon 30-Dec-13 21:26:06

I do hope who ever thought about that being patronising was joking!

There is a time and place for everything. If we start getting worried about too many things being a tad patronising we would never have any jokes at all. Most humour tends to rely a little on this stuff.

We need to remember Greatnan and her supply of jokes of all kinds.
She was very sharp about such things as not being patronising or sexist in discussions but she could see the funny side of things and liked a joke.

Just look at her "Chat forum" Just jokes thread.

Ok. smile

@ jinglebellrocks
its not that older people accept ''harmless'' ageism were just not obsessed with it like you..

Galen Mon 30-Dec-13 20:32:15

eglantine I'll believe that when I don't see it!

Soutra Mon 30-Dec-13 20:28:46

tchhmm??

jinglbellrocks Mon 30-Dec-13 20:09:06

I think too many older people accept "harmless" ageism.

I will shut up now. smile

Ana Mon 30-Dec-13 19:46:58

I think that you either like it and find it funny, as most of the posters on this thread do, or you don't much care for it and find it vaguely patronising, as I do.

Both opinions are valid!

nightowl Mon 30-Dec-13 19:43:20

Are we over thinking this? confused

It's all a bit 'how many gransnetters does it take to analyse a joke?' Don't ya think?

rosesarered Mon 30-Dec-13 19:18:33

The verse itself is fine and quite amusing.

rosesarered Mon 30-Dec-13 19:13:52

Yes, it's the bit at the end isn't it? Grandpa, awww , bless! kind of thing?

Soutra Mon 30-Dec-13 18:41:35

Ah yes, a"patronising gits" alert.
You may have a point.

AlieOxon Mon 30-Dec-13 18:36:53

I inherited my first computer from my dad who died in 1988 at 81...I thought if he can do it, so can I!
It was an Amstrad with no memory at all, you had to install every program.
Roll on Windows, great improvement!

(Anyone remember when Google actually counted the number of pages it was searching?)

jinglbellrocks Mon 30-Dec-13 18:27:41

I think I just might have already expressed "my problem". grin

Soutra Mon 30-Dec-13 18:19:52

So unless you are a grandad, what is your problem? Not sufficiently PC? tchhmm

jinglbellrocks Mon 30-Dec-13 17:44:12

But they did n't say "brother". They said "grandad". confused

feetlebaum Mon 30-Dec-13 17:28:45

My uncle took up using a PC in his 80s, and did voluntary work at a hospital - entering patient data!

There are a lot of 'silver surfers' out there... and the verse made me laugh.

NfkDumpling Mon 30-Dec-13 17:07:24

What's the problem? Grandpa was using the computer. He wasn't afraid of it and maybe knew that Control/Enter has magical properties.

(What does it do? I daren't try it in case I vanish!)

janeainsworth Mon 30-Dec-13 16:46:04

Penstemmon I think that some people don't want to learn new things unless they can perceive the benefits, but with computers(as with many other things) you can't perceive the benefits until you've learned how to use the things, so it's a bit of a vicious circle.

Well done to your WI for trying to encourage them.

Penstemmon Mon 30-Dec-13 16:38:05

jingl like you I do not like ageist attitudes but you could substitute brother for grandpa and it would be just as amusing and there are Luddites out there!

I have a number of older WI members who do not use computers. I send out a WI newsletter but at least 1/4 of members are paired up with a computer pal who prints it out and delivers it to them. Either that or they use their husband's email as they do not have one and then ask their husbands to print it for them confused

I was shocked to discover this and we are now running basic computer lessons for any members who want to learn but many of them , all older women, do not want to know! My 88 yr old aunt skypes and FBs so it is not a matter of age but attitude!

soop Mon 30-Dec-13 12:30:38

Sigh...thanks, jings

jinglbellrocks Mon 30-Dec-13 12:26:36

No. Give it time soop. You have been through what my doc calls "an insult to nature". You need rest more than anything at the moment.

jinglbellrocks Mon 30-Dec-13 12:24:29

I've already done my twenty minutes! [halo] tchgrin

soop Mon 30-Dec-13 12:19:13

jings...on yer bike! Mine needs a spin. Not in the mood for exercise at the mo' wink

Stansgran Mon 30-Dec-13 12:14:01

Oh come on. It is sweet and charming and possibly refers to an older generation. Not us at all. The 90 year olds fifteen years back were possibly the ones who did silly things. My DH killed the pooter on Xmas Eve because he has always had a sekerterry to deal with stuff for him. But the pooter has been restored to life by our friendly expensive technocrat who addressed me through out the proceedings as the one who understands.
