Found it! I had missed it somehow in the food section of threads.
While here I will say something crumpet related! I have never made them but DH is addicted to the things and he says that Warburtons are the best. He always grills them in the toaster [on at max] TWICE!

sorry, this has nothing to do with crumpets, but I can't find the thread that details all the 'good buys' from the different supermarkets that you all use. Can someone remember where the thread is?

Im in Inland Spain and crumpets are for a premium in any shop that does happen to stock them and anyway, they are dead easy, and taste so mch better anyway. Far easier than scones, my scones often go wrong!
Dried yeast seems to work just as well. The local bakery will sell me some fresh if I ask her, but I always get a funny look! and Lindylooby you are so right, improver makes all the diff, but I can't get that anymore. envy

I also use Dove's dried yeast in a large packet that I buy from Lakeland. If you are making bread a teaspoon of dough improver brings the bread into a whole new place, again from Lakeland.

Supermarket bakeries here give you yeast free too.

Paul Hollywood has a recipe and he uses dried yeast.
My kids prefer my homemade ones. You can freeze them as well.

They are so easy to make. I use a griddle (girdle in Scotland) and crumpet rings.
It's just a batter with flour, milk and yeast.

I buy gluten free ones -which are surprisingly good - unless you buy M&S which are flipping awful.

Didn`t know anyone made their own, I always buy them, find Co-op`s own brand the best.

Galen Sat 11-Jan-14 16:39:08

I've just found you can buy it on amazon!

Galen Sat 11-Jan-14 16:31:39

Packets do work but I us used to use fresh for making crumpets, savarins and rum babas.
I'm not sure if our waitrose does bake in store.
Academic at the moment as I can't drive due to my shoulder.

Nelliemoser Sat 11-Jan-14 16:29:57

Lindyb Good point! I had heard of that but I had forgotten it.

Lindylooby Sat 11-Jan-14 16:12:51

Galen, if you ask at many of the instore bakeries in supermarkets they will usually sell you some...but most just give it to you!

Nelliemoser Sat 11-Jan-14 16:05:12

Galen would the bread yeast sachets not work? You are tempting me to try now.

Galen Sat 11-Jan-14 15:53:20

Should be ages

Galen Sat 11-Jan-14 15:53:06

I can't make scones but I can make crumpets. In fact any yeast bakery I like doing. I wonder if you still get fresh yeast though. Haven't seen any anywhere for aged.

Nelliemoser Sat 11-Jan-14 15:35:53

Making crumpets indeed! whats wrong with a shop. wink
This is one bit of baking I have never tried. My efforts with scones are always a hard flat disaster.

tillyflop Sat 11-Jan-14 15:17:40

Thats cheating! wink

Galen Sat 11-Jan-14 15:06:57

You can do it then cut them in half. That way you twice the amount of butter

tillyflop Sat 11-Jan-14 15:05:22

DH complained that there was no point to the crumpets in that case! back to the drawing board....hmm

kittylester Sat 11-Jan-14 14:56:19

That would be a shame grin

tillyflop Sat 11-Jan-14 14:53:03

Just had a thought whilst making crumpets.... if I turn them over before they are quite dry on the top the holes are covered over with that little bit of batter and you can't fill em up with butter!!grin
