Some pearl barley in the pot first please, then everything added on top. Small onions left whole are tasty too

I like a splash of malt vinegar on a plate of stew - it's delicious!

When a friend of mine is doing pork or chicken in the slow cooker she adds a handful of dry sage & onion stuffing mix. She says it gives a good flavour and helps it to thicken.

Oh, I love stews and I am with your DH on the, they taste better the following day as does ham broth. Yum

When I make a stew I add a tsp of Demerara and a crumbled ginger snap as this thickens the stock.

We had a beef stew and dumplings the other night and I finished it off for my lunch today with some crusty bread. I also slow cook it all day , you can't beat a hot stew on a cold day as you come in from the cold the smell just is so satisfying.

Oh for me, without the kidney Galen, but there is nothing quite like long stewed steak and onions, with dumplings. My mouth is watering. I usually eat meat a couple of times a week, I love vegi casseroles/stews as well. But, those long cooked lamb stews, hard to beat.

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 18:36:37

I am dying for a steak and kidney with dumplings!smile
Then I think about the calories.sad

I don't know the answer to that Nfk. I'm Sorry I missed the apple crumble. I can't remember what I did the morning of my wedding too nervous I expect.
My husband prefers stews the day after. He says they taste better warmed up but I'm not keen. I am going to take my sister advice though and use the pressure cooker later in the week. Bring out the beet root

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 23-Jan-14 18:20:27

It's probably a very good stew, because it won't boil.

NfkDumpling Thu 23-Jan-14 18:15:27

I love stews and casseroles. If it's cooked in a slow cooker is it a stew or a casserole?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 23-Jan-14 18:10:49

Yes. And you can put it on early in the day whilst you are still feeling a bit energetic.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 23-Jan-14 18:09:18

Definitely! Food first. grin Had a journey to honeymoon destination on the back of a motorbike in front of me. And only a buffet in between.

I love long slow, one pot food. I do use recipes sometimes, for new ideas, but a good stew can't be beaten, especially in January. Enjoy it Kiora

Got to get your priorities right, jingl! grin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 23-Jan-14 17:58:30

I cooked a lamb stew on the morning of my wedding day. For my bridesmaid and me.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 23-Jan-14 17:56:59

I have gone back to cooking old fashioned stews. I use up left over Sunday joint. They used to say, "a stew boiled is a stew spoiled". I have never been able to cook a stew without it going over the simmering point. hmm Always tastes good though.

FlicketyB Thu 23-Jan-14 15:51:04

Sounds delicious, have it with red cabbage and I will come and share it with you!, Oh I will bring a pud, apple crumble?

Ana Wed 22-Jan-14 18:30:10

As long as you simmer it for long enough, it should be fine! smile

Kiora Wed 22-Jan-14 18:06:22

It might be! I have just spoken to my sister who tells me it won't taste the same because we used a pressure cooker in the 1960.

Ana Wed 22-Jan-14 18:02:25

Surely it won't be that bad? confused

Kiora Wed 22-Jan-14 17:50:47

I'm not a bad cook. I wouldn't win any competitions. I think my generation of family cooks are far more adventurous than our own mothers. A few nights ago I cooked risotto. I often cook Delia's Belgium casserole. I use red peppers, celeriac, spices and wine. I often try my hand at new recipes. My own mother would never had the option of using some of these ingredients and if she did she wouldn't have. When I was a teenager it was my job to cook the dinner. I would often cook a stew. I remember it as being delicious. We had no recipe books. I put meat and 'English'root veg carrots, potatoes, parsnips and onions poured stock cubes dissolved over it salt and pepper. Then boiled it. So tonight that's what I'm doing. The only difference is i'v browned the meat and ingredients. When it's cooked depending if it's stodgy or wet I will eat the Liverpudlian way with red cabbage or beet root. Bugger being sophisticated ! (Joke) And then I might, just might have a little cry. Just because I want to.
