Handbags and what planet ...

This is another one of those "What planet are they on?!" moments for me. Mulberry is bringing out a "cheaper range of handbags" at £495 instead of £5000.

Apart from the fact that I hate handbags that weigh a ton before there is even anything in them (so would never buy a monster bag), how can the papers run stories like this alongside reports of the burgeoning food banks. I shake my head.

I know what I need in a handbag and buy when I see it. My requirements are a) crossover otherwise I would leave it somewhere!!b) Then comes decent size outside pocket to hold my bus pass and another on the other side for anything extra that I want to get hold of quickly. c) Inside the bag I want a good size zipped section which will hold credit/bank cards in one of those plastic holders meant for the purpose plus a little extra cash in a wallet. d)a place for keys e)pocket for mobile phone f) a large enough area to hold purse and other personal items. Also don’t want it too heavy. I have acquired quite a few over the years bought from stores, markets and two weeks ago I passed a handbag shop (Boris) which had a bag that looked promising having been made in leather ( though I am not overly fussed about that) with £50 off the price. Bringing it down to £35. I went in and it had everything and more. On looking closer it said it was a messenger bag and although not at all obvious might be intended for a man. I love it.

I was at a works dinner once and one of the ladies was referring to her handbag as 'the Mulberry' and telling us how much she paid for it. Sitting next to her was another lady whose son is a very famous actor and she had just been to his film premier in Hollywood. Needless to say we all asked the very proud mum all about her experience. Sorry Mulberry lady but your bag was not so interesting.

and realise I must buck up. Just plain lazy and it does look better.

Never had any desire for a designer handbag but used to be vigilant at changing bag to match outfit. However I've become a bit lax with this ans

I gave up handbags decades ago - so just have a few for weddings and suchlike. I see them as an 'old woman' accessory.

Go to any airport there will be a row of handbag shops, why do they think travellers need another handbag?.

Freya5 Fri 02-Jun-23 08:53:40

If you can afford it, and let's face it many people can. Let them enjoy their purchase, or should they hang their heads because many can't, me included. My daughters can, they have good jobs and work hard. So they can indulge now and again.

Oh really?
I didn't realise. My word, that was a bit harsh, I've seen far worse than Jen ever posted.

We did have some disagreements but then agreed about other things.

I loved Ana’s humour. Such a funny lady. I still think of her.
She often made a funny comeback to the queen of the blue link as I called DurhamJen.

Is Galen still visiting Soop's kitchen?

janeainsworth, felice, janerowena ?

And POGS, always a voice of reason.

And nice to see some “old” faces!
Granjura, Marelli, Grannyactivist, Rosesarered, Ana (RIP) - only two as far as I can see, still on GN, albeit with new names.

Do we know what actually happened to Ana? She just seemed to disappear. I liked her.

when rishi sunak was chancellor of the exchequer he was pictured in his study, labouring away on the budget.
a newspaper helpfully identified the various items around him, including an insulated cup.
i have one that cost about £5.
i'm sure you can get an excellent one for £25.
rich people, i imagine, might even spend twice that.
his cup apparently cost over £300.
while he worked on the budget.
that told me all i needed to know about him.

Can't believe people still use hankies smile I thought they'd died a death years ago. To answer the OP's question I don't care about over priced designer handbags either.

My DH thinks they are the best thing ever for wiping his glasses.

grannybiz I bought a good cross body bag fro Amazon. They had loads. It was very useful in New York last winter.
I would have started a new thread rather than resurrecting one from 2014.

What happened to some of the names on here? Are they still on GN?
I think I was around on GN in this year[maybe a couple of years later]. I was hoping to see myself here! But didnt think I would be commenting about handbags.

I think handbags are affordable mini works of art, like jewellery. They express your personality and make you feel happy - nothing wrong with that! Everyone surely remembers their first 'proper' bag, or the first 'grown up' bag they bought before starting work? I do and LOVE all of them, and I am glad I kept most of them cos now they are vintage and if I want I can still rock the look!!

Also there is a very healthy market for designer names from the forties, fifties and sixties so some brands hold their value. More stuff to hang on to then!
