Got my ENT appointment ...30th June

Deni1 Fri 16-May-14 10:41:33

Just got my hospital appointment for 30th June there must be a lot of dizzy people around :-) Last couple of days it's been on and off it's a frustrating and annoying condition you just want the freedom to do what you want without being over cautious, feeling sick and awful. On top of that got pain in left mid groin that seems to move and hurt if I lean forward then pops back to wherever if I straighten up tall, I'm living the 60's again but it's not how I remember it the first time round.... :-) :-)

BPPV is the known name.

I have had labrynthitis twice, and it went away after a few days. Dr gave me pills, which were to stop sickness, not cure the cause. I took them thinking they would cure but did not.

Next i got BPPV, turning over in bed on the L side made my head spin, got a physio appointment, the physic was supposed to be an expert in such matters, and she tried to do the Epley manoeuvre. I was violently sick and she had to call husband to pick me up.

Drs were worse than useless to get a hospital referral, but physio pushed and I got a n appointment in the audiology dept.

She performed Epley, and timed the episodes meticulously. That was in September, but now its back, and I have requested I see her again.

Getting up in the morning I do it slowly, down escalators are awful, so I get the lift

Timescale labyrinthitis June 011, Oct 012.

BPPV March 013, saw physio June 013, Audiologist Sept 013

My sympathies to those of you who suffer through a medical condition. My Aunt had Meniere's Disease and suffered so much because of it.

Agus Thu 15-May-14 22:24:17

Vertigo is a balance disorder not always associated with a medical condition. The term is used because the symptoms are the same for both conditions.
I don't have a fear of heights (acrophobia), I experience vertigo when looking down from great heights but not because I am frightened.

I would still like to walk up,the Eiffel Tower though.....maybe one day smile

Anyone have migraines or neck trouble?

Deni1 Thu 15-May-14 19:41:45

Everyone has their own experience if you were told it was viral what made them think that, as I said I'v had dizzy spells about 5 times the first three not as bad having said that I remember on a holiday to Somerset in 1996 waking very dizzy and staggering to the local doctor who gave me medication, the symptoms eased and I had no problem that I can remember until last few years. I hope all those above mentioned find an answer and an end to this nightmare.

My daughter in law and my son both have recurring dizziness, docs don't know what is causing it.
DIL suffers much more episodes than my son, it's completely random and as confused the docs because they both get it.
GP firstly thought it might be a virus, DIL as had many different blood tests and a MRI scan which show nothing abnormal.
She is due to see an endocrinologist shortly because she now has periods of loss of energy.
I so hope they can sort this out for them, they are only in their 30s and it's totally interfering with their life.

Grrrflowers of course!

kittylester Thu 15-May-14 18:09:06

Fear of heights brings on dizziness and is very debilitating at the time! I have suffered from vertigo caused by a middle ear infection and the sensation is very similar.

{flowers] to anyone suffering the very real thing!

I suffer from positional vertigo every few weeks. I tend to notice it mainly if I get up quickly whilst laying in bed I tend to reel about all over the place. So now I have learnt to slowly lift my head from the pillow and let the rest follow in a more gentle fashion and I never turn my head quickly on the pillow as it is reminiscent of having too much to drink! There are some really good exercises on Youtube that can help to alleviate some of the symptoms of positional vertigo.

annodomini Thu 15-May-14 17:58:36

annsixty, that sounds like the labyrinthitis I had a couple of years ago. I couldn't move without throwing up and the room was going round me as if I'd had too much to drink. The doctor had to visit and prescribed an anti-emetic which was effective in that it stopped me vomiting, though the dizziness took a week or so to wear off. Luckily it was a viral version of this horrible thing, not the recurrent kind.

annsixty Thu 15-May-14 17:48:08

When I had it about 10 years ago mine was the falling over and vomiting type.I got out of bed to go to the loo and fell into the wardrobe (gin was not involved) and couldn't even turn my head without vomiting. It lasted a few days and the Dr prescribed some anti nausea tabs which were not at all effective and when I visited the surgery I was told I shouldn't have stayed in bed but how I would have got up was not made clear. It was a horrible experience but I have never had it again.

Deni1 Thu 15-May-14 17:39:37

Sometimes I think I'm getting there then it gets bad again. Shops are bad had a few do,s in them, And walking like a puppet. It is scary then the fact it hangs around to a lesser degree doesn't help. It's good to listen to other people's experiences though it's something to relate to and know people have had it before you and your not alone. Of course there is the fear of a bad attack returning and that knocks Your confidence

tanith Thu 15-May-14 17:26:48

Sorry to hear that Deni its very scary I know hope you don't have to wait too long.

tanith Thu 15-May-14 17:22:14

I was wondering why all the posts about fear of heights, that is Acrophobia.

sweetheartnana Thu 15-May-14 17:07:13

vertigo isn't a fear of heights. It's a serious and debilitating condition of the inner ear. Mine was serious enough for me to be rushed to hospital. It was caused by an infection and an allergy to Caffeine. I felt as though I has seasickness, a Hangover and a migraine all at the same time. I couldn't even sit up in bed without falling over and was repeatedly vomiting. I avoid caffeine now as even the weakest cup of coffee makes me a bit dizzy. The first time I had vertigo, the room spun around me while I stood still, very disorienting.

www.patient.co.uk/doctor/benign-paroxysmal-positional-vertigo-pro

This was what caused mine. I've worked out that it's my left ear that's affected & never lie on that side in bed as it can bring it on again. Very unpleasant.

kittylester Thu 15-May-14 15:59:39

Yes!

Most embarrassing time was when I was learning to rock climb and froze a bout 10 feet up a 20 foot climb. Some poor instructor had to come and move my hands and feet one by one until I reached the floor. blush

Last time was on the ramparts of Framlingham Castle when I decided that it was all in my head grin and I could do it if I really wanted to. I couldn't and had to walk veeerrryyy slowly, with my eyes half closed sao I couldn't see down but could see where to put my feet, clutching the outer wall [there wasn't an inner wall shock]

Deni1 Thu 15-May-14 15:55:39

Had dizzy d's over past couple of yr one earlier this yr when room kept going one way past me but this episode was bad the room spun every which way, vomited for 2 days in bed a week now gradually gaining balance back doing as much as I can but confidence lacking on my own, waiting for hospital appointments but there isn't any yet.

mcem Thu 15-May-14 15:49:17

I first discovered it in the Whispering Gallery in St Paul's, then climbing the stairs of Sacre Coeur in Paris and on the battlements of Elcho Castle. NOT however on the Empire State building or the Eiffel tower. It makes me feel like a very dizzy pin which is being attracted by a giant magnet below me. Horrible feeling but not like the dizziness of an inner ear infection. I've worked out that it's ok if I'm behind a high barrier or fence but it's just awful to feel I could topple over a lower wall!

Agus Thu 15-May-14 15:31:17

I only discovered this as I started to climb the stairs of the Eiffel Tower. Didn't even reach the first level when I froze on the spot, unable to go in any direction. Horribly debilitating experience.

tiggypiro Thu 15-May-14 15:26:40

Yes. I didn't have it as bad as some people get it at all and it was the sort which happens because of a crystal stuck in the inner ear somewhere. (No doubt there is a medic who can help me out there!). A feeling of dizziness could come over me at any time and each episode only lasted about 10 seconds. Not long I know but very disconcerting when walking down the street and especially when swimming or driving. It was cured by going to the dentist and being tipped back in the chair. A few months later and it came back. This time a pilates exercise of almost doing a backward roll cured it.
