sainsburys and other - cut flowers

My DD (a biochemist and geneticist working with plants) always says "What on earth do they do to these plants?" when she sees me with a vase of chrysanthamums still looking fresh after 3 weeks. It's a bit worrying that someone like her doesn't know how they do it.

Yesterday I noticed many trays standing outside Home & bargain down on the Promenade being wind swept from the winds coming in from The Mersey they looked so bedraggled such a shame.It is well known locally that the wind facture is always bad down there even on the best of days I was sure the manager would move them inside but no they where left to the elements,I'm sure the salt spray from the River doesn't do them any good either.

I usually pick up a bunch of flowers from Sainsburys every week and they are always well watered and last a long time. The one time the flowers only lasted a couple of days I complained at the service desk and was immediately given a refund.

What do they do to the flowers, to stop them in their tracks like that? If we picked a bunch of Sweet William or daffs and kept them indoors without water, they would die.

They are, Deedaa but they don't water them. I hate to see racks and racks of dead plants.

Actually if you buy them when they first come in I've always found Aldi's bedding plants brilliant value.

Have to say the ones at our Lidl look fine.

The plants outside our local Aldi are usually dead.

They're very cheap though.

I saw a chap at my nearest Lidl watering their bedding plants.

Unsupervised, no protective clothing or anything!

Is there a Sainsbury's in Falmouth now? I used to work in the Asda there, but I think the only other supermarkets were Tesco and Safeway.

Our local Waitrose seems to keep the bedding plants regularly watered, but someone did tell me that Aldi never water theirs because of health and safety !?!?

Supermarkets seem blind to the water needs of plants and flowers. Our local Tesco and Waitrose both have trays of bedding plants wilting pathetically. Cruelty to dumb plants Just as well they don't sell puppies and kittens!

I understood that daffs were not supposed to be stored in water to prevent them opening.
