I have just sat for a coffee break in the middle of the weekly housework and listened to Vaughn Williams "Lark Ascending".
I live on the South Downs and this piece of music absolutely transports me to the many walks I have had on the Downs with the grasses and wild flowers blowing in the breeze and larks singing their hearts out.

It is sublime. In fact I wouldn't mind listening to this as I pass out of this mortal coil!!!

No apology mcem. I knew it was up wi' the bonnets. We sang it at school and I have heard it often over the years.

Come fill up my cup, come fill up my can, la,la la. A rousing song.

mcem Sun 06-Jul-14 22:12:45

Oooops! Sorry Agus. Maybe I should have said Up wi' the bonnets o ' Bonnie Dundee. More recognisable perhaps?

Agus Sun 06-Jul-14 22:05:46

Can't stop singing Bonnie Dundee now mcem grin

mcem Sun 06-Jul-14 22:01:17

Bonnie Dundee about Graham of Claverhouse and The Road and the Miles to Dundee. As children we always sang the latter on the way home from holidays and day-trips.

Ok so I copied this from UTube - Norfolk's Heaving Cleavages youtu.be/mEHKRW2AIMU. I think it should work, it's worrying what you get when you search for Heaving Cleavages!

Welsh hymns. Can't remind you of anywhere but Wales. And anything with a harp in it, naturally.

I found this through Google. Not something I've ever hear before.

If the link doesn't work it's called Hopping Down in Kent. You won't miss much if it doesn't. grin

"The Skye Boat Song" which relates to The Outer and Inner Hebrides

feetlebaum Sun 06-Jul-14 09:59:35

For those living around Runcorn and Widnes, there is Noël Coward's song -"When It's Raspberry Time in Runcorn"...

Oh yes there is...

kittylester Sun 06-Jul-14 09:56:03

I suppose we've got Englebert Humperdinck and Kasabian but they are hardly traditional either grin

NfkDumpling Sun 06-Jul-14 09:55:51

Then there's the Heaving Cleavages of course. (I tried to copy the U Tube Link but couldn't). They're brilliant.

NfkDumpling Sun 06-Jul-14 09:48:35

The best I can think of for Norfolk is Hev Yew Gotta
Loight Bor by the Singing Postman -who was really from Lincolnshire thank goodness.

The Sheringham Shantymen have some good sea and fishing songs though.

kittylester Sun 06-Jul-14 09:40:19

Brilliant jing Thank you ! I hadn't thought that it 'came' from here but I suppose it does now.

I can't think of anything like 'The Keel Row' though!

KatyK Sun 06-Jul-14 09:37:34

None from Brum as above but too many to list from my Irish heritage.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 06-Jul-14 09:21:17

What about Oranges and Lemons, Eloethan?
I am not sure about St Clements and St Martins, but Shoreditch, Stepney, and the Great Bell of Bow are certainly in East London smile

Eloethan Sun 06-Jul-14 01:29:20

I'm in east London - no tune, as far as I am aware, for this particular area but perhaps "Waterloo Sunset" can do for all of London.

Trevor Duncan's St. Boniface Down (Isle of Wight)

I no longer live there but it will always be my spiritual home.

Again from North East England. What about the Lambton Worm, which my dad used to sing? It goes on forever, but the chorus is:

Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
An Aa'll tell ye's aall an aaful story
Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
An' Aa'll tell ye 'boot the worm.

And there's Dance To Your Daddy, Close the Coalhouse Door, The Oak and the Ash.
