I have just sat for a coffee break in the middle of the weekly housework and listened to Vaughn Williams "Lark Ascending".
I live on the South Downs and this piece of music absolutely transports me to the many walks I have had on the Downs with the grasses and wild flowers blowing in the breeze and larks singing their hearts out.

It is sublime. In fact I wouldn't mind listening to this as I pass out of this mortal coil!!!

Bet you havent heard this musical hall song from Joe Wilson about the North East

Come, Geordie—ha'd the Bairn or Aw wish thy Muther wad cum.
Air – “"The Whistling Thief".”

Come, Geordie, ha'd the bairn,
Aw's sure aw'll not stop lang;
Aw'd tyek the jewel me sel,
But really aw's not strang.
Thor's floor an' coals to get,
The hoose-wark's not half deun,
Sae--haud the bairn for fairs,
Thou's often deun't for fun.

Then Geordie held the bairn,
But sair agyen his will;
The poor bit thing wes good,
But Geordie had nee skill;
He haddent its Muther's ways,
He sat byeth stiff an' numb;
Afore five minutes was gyen,
He wish'd its Muther wad cum.

His wife had hardlys gyen,
The bairn began to squall,
With hikin't up an' doon
He varry neigh let it fall.
It nivver wad ha'd its tung,
Tho' some aud teun he'd hum--
"Jack and Jill went up the hill"--
"Aw wish thy Muther wad cum."

What weary toil said he
This nursin' bairns mun be;
A bit on't's well enough,
Aye, quite eneuf for me.
To ha'd-a blubberin' bairn,
It may be grand to some;
A day's wark's not as bad--
"Aw wish thy Muther wad cum.

" Men seldom give a thowt
To what their wives endure;
Aw thowt she'd nowt to dee
But clean the hoose, aw's sure,
Or myek my dinner an' tea--
(It's startin' to sook its thumb;
The Poor thing wants its tit)--
"Aw wish thy Muther wad cum."

What a selfish world this is!
There's nowt mair sae than Man;
He laffs at Wimmin's toill,
An' nivvir 'll norse his awn--
(It's startin' to cry agyen--
Aw see tuts throo it's gum;)
Maw canny bit pet, O dinna thoo fret--
"Aw wish thy Muther wad cum."

But kindness dis a vast-
It's nee use gettin vext--
It'll niver please the bairn,
Or ease a mind perplext.
At last it's gyen to sleep,
The Wife'll not say aw's numb--
She'll think aw's a real good nurse--
But--"Aw wish thy Muther wad cum."

Or how about
The Keel row:-

As I came thro' Sandgate,

Thro' Sandgate, thro' Sandgate,

As I came thro' Sandgate,

I heard a lassie sing:

'O, weel may the keel row,
The keel row, the keel row,
O weel may the keel row
That my laddie's in.'
'O wha's like my Johnnie,

Sae leish, sae blithe, sae bonnie?

He's foremost 'mang the mony

Keel lads o' coaly Tyne;

He'll set or row sae tightly

Or, in the dance sae sprightly,

He'll cut and shuffle slightly,

'Tis true, were he nae mine.'

'He wears a blue bonnet,

Blue bonnet, blue bonnet,

He wears a blue bonnet

A dimple in his chin.

And weel may the keel row,
The keel row, the keel row,
And weel may the keel row
That my laddie's in.'

From the West of Scotland, Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns. Plus many more by the Bard. Plus Bagpipes as World Bagpies Championships are held here.

Agus Sat 05-Jul-14 22:31:37

Oops! World Bagpipes.

I had The Keel Row in my songbook when I was a kid. The one I stole from the Sunday School cupboard. I used to sing it sitting up in bed. I seemed to instictively know the tune. confused

glassortwo Sat 05-Jul-14 22:41:08

jingle what are you like grin can you still sing it?

harrigran Sat 05-Jul-14 23:12:24

The Keel row was DD's school song at her school in Newcastle, quite apt as there was a lot of shipbuilding on the Tyne in those days.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Jul-14 23:19:00

I was alright with the chorus Glass but the northern bits used to slow me down. grin (still the same)

I can only think of Leaving on a jet plane for me. hmm

Maggiemaybe Sat 05-Jul-14 23:27:53

Again from North East England. What about the Lambton Worm, which my dad used to sing? It goes on forever, but the chorus is:

Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
An Aa'll tell ye's aall an aaful story
Whisht! Lads, haad yor gobs,
An' Aa'll tell ye 'boot the worm.

And there's Dance To Your Daddy, Close the Coalhouse Door, The Oak and the Ash.

Trevor Duncan's St. Boniface Down (Isle of Wight)

I no longer live there but it will always be my spiritual home.

I'm in east London - no tune, as far as I am aware, for this particular area but perhaps "Waterloo Sunset" can do for all of London.

janeainsworth Sun 06-Jul-14 07:26:38

What about Oranges and Lemons, Eloethan?
I am not sure about St Clements and St Martins, but Shoreditch, Stepney, and the Great Bell of Bow are certainly in East London smile

MiceElf Sun 06-Jul-14 07:44:04

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner
Knock 'em down the Old Kent Road

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 06-Jul-14 09:21:17

smile

KatyK Sun 06-Jul-14 09:37:34

None from Brum as above but too many to list from my Irish heritage.

kittylester Sun 06-Jul-14 09:40:19

Brilliant jing Thank you ! I hadn't thought that it 'came' from here but I suppose it does now.

I can't think of anything like 'The Keel Row' though!

NfkDumpling Sun 06-Jul-14 09:48:35

The best I can think of for Norfolk is Hev Yew Gotta
Loight Bor by the Singing Postman -who was really from Lincolnshire thank goodness.

The Sheringham Shantymen have some good sea and fishing songs though.

NfkDumpling Sun 06-Jul-14 09:55:51

Then there's the Heaving Cleavages of course. (I tried to copy the U Tube Link but couldn't). They're brilliant.

kittylester Sun 06-Jul-14 09:56:03

I suppose we've got Englebert Humperdinck and Kasabian but they are hardly traditional either grin

feetlebaum Sun 06-Jul-14 09:59:35

For those living around Runcorn and Widnes, there is Noël Coward's song -"When It's Raspberry Time in Runcorn"...

Oh yes there is...

newist Sun 06-Jul-14 10:46:04

"The Skye Boat Song" which relates to The Outer and Inner Hebrides
