Oh phoenix I don't think I've ever paid more than a fiver for a bottle of wine more than a couple of times in my life (except for special sparkly stuff). One of my friends, early in our relationship, was once so horrified by the plonk I served her that she has always brought her own ever since. There are now several brands that I believe are 'good' and I look out for them on special offer - but always for under a fiver because I can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive wine. For me, spending more than a fiver would be throwing pearls before swine.

Try Aldi - they do some super wines under £4- honestly. When we lived in Spain when my OH was working there, the most wonderful wine was a local vineyard and cost I Euro. Got happily plastered on that a few times

I'm with you ga and bee. We only buy wines over a fiver at Christmas (and then not much over a fiver!). I also buy Aldi wine. They do a nice one for £3.99 (can't think what it's called). Asda used to do 3 for a tenner but they have stopped this offer now They were nice wines, you could pick from a few different ones. I can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive, but I know what tastes nice to me. We used to do the 'booze run' to France and some of the wines were ridiculously cheap and they were great.

Me too - although I can't seem to find many wines under a fiver these days! I like rosé, not too strong, and if you shop around there are bargains to be had. Asda recently had a 3 for £12 offer, KatyK.

I wouldn't pay £7.29, never mind £10.99 for a bottle!

I love Sauvignon Blanc! I live in a wine region, so all the locals are accustomed to "good" wine. Usually about $10 cheapest (7 euros?). On the happy side, I often get wine as a hostess gift.

As most of you know I am a devotee of wine - and made a terrible mistake last week when I purchased tesco`s half price wine but failed to notice that the offer ended at midnight the day before delivery - was on the phone right away and nice young woman in Dundee said give it back to delivery man next time. Phew I always go for half price and £13.99 made me feel ill anyway all was well and they even sent me a nice email taking the blame themselves.

We don`t have Aldi or Waitrose in N Ireland so am dependent on Tesco, Sainsbury`s or some local wine stores - oh how difficult my life can be at times!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh SPARKY , I do feel for you from the bottom of my heart.

May I suggest you go and open one of those bottles and have a glass or two !!

Ooooooooops forgot Asda

Don't know why, but I really cannot stand our nearest Asda, might be something about the lighting?

Who cares about lighting if you can get three bottles of wine for £12?

(Only joking, honest!)

I almost enjoy shopping at Asda , which is my local. I go on a Tuesday morning when shoppers can be seen singing and jiggling in the aisles as they listen to golden oldie music from artists such as Abba and Elvis, DJ'd by Chris Tarrant.
I know nothing about their wine as I don't drink alcohol.

My local Asda doesn't have any music playing at all - lovely. Neither does Tesco, come to think about it...

My DH always complains when I ask him to go to Asda. He says 'I hate that bloody shop'.

After my lunch with my friend earlier , I popped into M/S to have a look round , I did buy a rather nice dress --reduced !

What I notice though as I was browsing, that music was playing.

Nipped into Waitrose for a quick shop earlier Phoenix. Got a couple of bottles, many thanks. If you ever see an offer for my favourite, Chablis Premier Cru, give me a shout please. Absolute nectar

There truly is a difference between cheap and slightly more expensive wine, I always buy better wine on special offer, would rather have less, but better quality. Cheap wine gives me a headache. I dont spend a fortune, but by going to £6-7 per bottle you truly do get better wine, such as the Faitrade range in the local Coop. I always look out for the Muriel Rioja when there is a bit knocked off it.

Aldi Grapevine Merlot - £3.29 a bottle. What's not to like?

They also do Toro Loco Tempranillo for £3.69



Their Sauvignon Blanc isn't very nice but they do a fairly decent Chardonnay for £3.99

I like music in shops. If they don't play I usually hum.

DD and I were in Clinton cards the other day and the music was so loud we couldn't hear the girl at the checkout asking if we wanted stamps/mobile phone top up/two for one ball point pens/a nice day.......

Bit of a blessing really.

I'm very happy with my non-musical shopping experience.

I think they make an exception at X**s when of course we must all be jolly and festive, and buy more rubbish seasonal tat! [GOW emoticon]
