rosesarered No, I didn't give them back to her, I thought that would be rude really. I just said thank you politely and put them at one side for anyone else's birthday that may be coming up. Does anyone else do this? Keep presents not suitable for giving again? I think it's called re-gifting.

roses, I do wish you hadn't started this thread!!! It comes up every time I look at the threads I'm on. Yum yum, mouth watering, not allowed any, got to lose another stone. And due a visit to the dentist!

Anyone remember Cowans Toffee you even got a little hammer in the tin to help smash it up - heavenly but I was very young then.

Gagagran I remember Riley`s toffee rolls scrumptious.

My neighbour of 13 years bought me last week for my 50th birthday, Thornton's Praline Chocolates and I have a nut allergy! Which she knows about! And she bought a bottle of wine, and I don't drink! Is she trying to say something I wonder???

My favourite was a very pale pink powder, called American Cream Soda, (not the drink) it was similar to sherbet, sold in paper bags out of a jar, and it was lovely. Haven`t seen it since we left Lancashire many years ago.

And of course, there was the white 'kayli' that number's talking about - it was made by Barratt's, I think? I was never very good at sucking it up through the liquorice 'straw' ! My favourite Thornton's toffee is the chocolate covered stuff, but I never touch it now as I'm terrified for my fillings!

It was known as Rainbow Crystals when I was young, it was sold from the jar exactly as you say, Marelli!

Kayli - rainbow-coloured crystals in a jar! The shopkeeper scooped out a pennyworth, twopence worth, etc into a cone-shaped bag, and we dipped our fingers into it, making it last as long as possible. It coloured our fingers and tongues and was lovely!

I loved kali, still do actually, especially with a stick of liquorice. My favourite Thorntons toffee is the special butter toffee, but I also like the treacle one, not too keen on the brazil nut, would love to try the liquorice. Their shop has closed down here now, but a few shos now stock Thorntons toffee. I`ve had their chocolates bought me a few times, but don`t really care for them.
Thinking of kali, does anybody remember the small, thin sticks of liquorice, or Spanish, as we called it (why?)? They used to cost a ha`penny, and just for devilment, we`d go in the shop and ask "how much are your ha`penny spanishes?" We thought we were being very clever and funny!

I can now taste the sweet/sour kaylie on my tongue just from talking about it! Yes, I remember the coloured finger that was the giveaway that you had been eating it! It was in a big jar at the sweetshop in a rainbow, like the coloured sand from the Isle Of Wight, and was tipped in a cone shape paper bag [or you could buy it already in it's own bag with a bit of licorice to slurp it with.Sherbert dabs were another fave of mine [no wonder I have fillings.]

I daren't have too many sweets in the house because I get hooked. I do though have a regular supply of Fox's Glacier Mints which I associate with the older generation.

Yes Nan kaylie was great.We had a thread a short while ago about sweets from the past and kaylie was popular on that.Couldn't eat it now though.When I was a child, the best toffee was Mc Gowans a small flat block which cost threepence [for fourpence if it was choc covered!]
Thorntons also do choc covered toffee I have now heard from a toffee loving friend.

In the 50s we used to have what was called K Lie anyone else heard of it ? It was in fact sherbet with the liquorice pipe in the tube to suck it up.

Homemade toffee was the best and a bottle of fizzy pop.

We love Thorntons too, but our local shop has now amalgamated with The Book Shop, sharing the premises. And about once a week, we cant resist a bag, which lasts no time at all. Yum. Also once were great fans of Fillerys. Anyone remember those, and I can still smell the aroma.

I really find toffee of any sort far too sweet. A piece of dark chocolate is more my taste or a bag of good quality Bombay mix even better.

Oh.... you've just reminded me that I have 4 small Thornton's caramel squares in the fridge.

Toffee has cost me too much money in the past via the dentist.
Rolo being a big culprit. Dentist said (as previously mentioned by suebailey1) that soft toffee is really bad with the suction effect and it was a Rolo that took my front cap/crown off recently.

I have an errand to do tomorrow - and Thornton's is next door

Rosearered , I never knew that it was called plot toffee, I've not heard of, or seen this toffee since my childhood.

How often has GNHQ appeared on this thread??? Hmm thought so.
