After years of never eating any toffee at all [not good for fillings!] I have suddenly been lusting after brazil nut toffee. Bought a bag costing £2 in Thorntons and ate it all in a few evenings. Heaven.

I wish I hadn't read that. Now longing for chocolate coated brazil nuts.

Did you really mean a few 'evenings' roses? I'm sure that if I dared to buy something like that (can't afford the dentist's bill, so won't) it would be eaten in a few minutes! grin

Does anyone remember Riley's chocolate toffee rolls? They were delicious and the toffee was a bit kinder to fillings as it wasn't as hard as Thornton's.

Don't like this thread, far too tempting. Will stay away from the shops until the craving wears off! Can't have nice things in the house or I eat them

In a few evenings?????? In our house it would be lucky to last a few minutes. Impressed!!

Oops just saw grannyactivist's post - great minds etc. I think I was too busy salivating over the thought of Thornton's treacle toffee. Tooooooo delicious

I love Brazil Nut toffee and used to buy it by the box. Sadly one Xmas another favourite Sugared almonds were responsible for me breaking a tooth and a succession of very expensive dentistry. The dentist who did the work swore me off toffee because of the suction effect it can have on caps and I really don't want to have or pay for any more work. Enjoy your toffee - I'm on the soft stuff.

I worked out that the sugared almond cost me about £2000 all told.!

I have 2 words to add
Thorntons Squares
and I have prpnably put on a pound just saying them.
Retires salivating and wondering if there's " anything we need from Sainsbury's" tbgrin

Terrafirma1 Mon 28-Jul-14 14:36:25

That should have read "probably" sad

Penstemmon Mon 28-Jul-14 14:57:06

we used to make toffee a lot when I was younger.... bashing it with a hammer was the best bit!

Terrafirma1 Mon 28-Jul-14 16:08:47

My Scottish grandpa also used to make toffee - he called it Russian toffee and it was very dark but it wasn't treacle toffee. Anybody know what it was? The hammer bit was great because we children used to get the little splintery bits.
My Granny's tablet was to die for! (And I am not talking Samsung Galaxy)

One toffee I used to get sometime back was Harrogate Toffee

In Sainsbury's for £1 they sell the equivalent of After Eights They are delicious and won't break your teeth. Even better if you put them in the freezer, that makes them last longer.

Has anyone visited the Lake District and tried the Penrith Toffee Shop fudge? A little shop in Brampton, where I used to live, stocked it. I used to treat myself occasionally, the DC never new where I hid it. I don't think that shop is there anymore and Penrith is too far away just to go for fudge. tbsad

hildajenniJ Mon 28-Jul-14 16:32:28

By the way, the toffee was yummy also. Little peices, individually wrapped grin

My mother used to make a yummy soft toffee with condensed milk & on bonfire night she made a hard toffe with dark treacle, I can taste them now !

A bag of Thorntons toffee would be lucky to last an evening here! Years ago, on Rochdale market, there was a man who shouted out, all day, "HOMEMADE TOFFEE!" He had a very loud voice, but his toffee was to die for.

rosesarered Mon 28-Jul-14 20:49:07

The £2 bag I bought contained an amazing amount of toffee, I thought I was a pig eating it over 3 nights!
Joelise My Mother made the same toffee, and the treacle hard toffee was called Plot Toffee and you ate it on Bonfire Night.
I think Thorntons is hard to beat, and they do a great licorice toffee too according to friends. May have to do some research on flavours [it's a hard job, but someone has to do it.] grin

rosesarered Mon 28-Jul-14 20:56:39

Well, Nonu tootle into the shop clutching a £2 piece and you could have a large bag all to yourself! Just don't open it when your DH is around.

rosesarered Mon 28-Jul-14 20:57:28

I think we should all do some research into the best flavours. smile
