oh dear,* Holly*, I must have lots of fleas with 3 cats and not vacuuming for 2 days at a time (lazy sod I know). didn't know vacuuming got rid of them.

It does make sense though - surely a lower wattage won't have enough suction to pull dust from the base of the carpet?

I have two dogs and when I bought a 14w vac a few years ago, it struggled to pick up dog hairs from the carpet. My new one has no such problem

Holly What about councils fixing whatever the reason is why streetlights stay on during the daytime? - not just around here then?

The council propose turning off many of the street lights between 12 midnight and 5 am to save money. No matter how many people tell them that there are many street lights left on all day every day they take no notice whatsoever.

Whoever decided that vacuum cleaners etc should be manufactured with a lower wattage should be forced to do comparison tests over the next few months, every single day, preferably under the supervision of Gransnetters. We can then time them and inspect their work to see how long it takes with different wattage appliances to get a result which satisfies us.
They can start at my house if they like.

I am not really in need of a new vacuum but have bought one just to beat the deadline. I know what I would like to do with the vacuum hose

I have heard it will include lawn mowers too at some point! Mine is used more often than the vacuum cleaner, and I use a hairdryer about once a year. (That doesn't mean I wash my hair once a year whether it needs it or not!)

Yep every other day - well he wont take his shoes off in the house and drags the garden through - he does the ironing too. As he does both he gets too choose which model we have. Family joke is that I'm not allowed things with plugs on.

There must be better ways to cut down the EU's energy bill and reduce emissions.

Well, you know those big electric advertising signs you see in every major city - the ones that blaze away 24 hours a day? They could try turning those off. What about discouraging more air travel by NOT building another runway? What about councils fixing whatever the reason is why streetlights stay on during the daytime? What about not centralising everything so that people don't have to drive miles to a shopping centre - have more outlets locally instead?

I do think it's a stupid ruling. The new washing machine I bought (many years ago) used less water but, as I have a mild skin condition, I was aware that the detergent had not been rinsed out of the clothing and bedding properly so I have to put the machine through an extra rinse cycle (makes the washing take longer).

I read an article that stated the reason homes do not have so much of a flea infestation anymore is down to regular vacuuming.

I used to have very long, thick hair and I know from personal experience that there is a world of difference between using a powerful hairdryer and that feels like it just puffs air at you.

The black market operators must be looking forward to a bit more business coming their way!

I should have said "whilst using LESS power"! Not "more".

I never use the full power on a vacuum cleaner. Just not necessary. The manufacturers have the means of making the vacuums more efficient whilst using more power. So they must do so.

And hairdryers that are too hot will ruin your hair.

Why don"t they just damn well leave us alone , poking their noses into every aspect of life!

I think they are going to look at hairdryers next year. The same applies - if they are less powerful, then we will have to use them for longer!!

Apparently they are going to reduce the power in other appliances also. My hairdresser is up in arms about the proposal to reduce the wattage of hairdriers. As for vacuum cleaners, I agree. It will take longer to clean your carpets and probably use as much power. There must be better ways to cut down the EU's energy bill and reduce emissions.
