Wind Chimes

Important to get one where the weight on the central drop is not too heavy or the wind cannot move it - mine will only sound in a gale - and we are not normally in the garden during a gale!

I had lots of them in my porch; always had to decide which one to 'activate' when I got home. Took them down a couple of years ago but found them again last week. Nearly threw them away but they went back into the cupboard. Need to find a new home for them [ceiling they were on is due to be plastered].

The local graveyard has banned wind chimes as mourners found them distracting during burial services.

As you can imagine this has upset some families who had placed wind chimes in the trees.

We don't like them but DD keeps hanging them up in the orchard so DH is threatening to use them for target practice!

Do they not drive you to distraction?

I don't think they should be in public places. I can fully understand why not in Graveyards. They could just drive you potty.

Don't inflict such things on your neighbours.

If I had next door neighbours (thankfully I don't) the two things that would drive me mad would be wind chimes and a b***dy great trampoline close to the fence.

I love windchimes - DH hates them.
I compromise and hang pretty things on our trees that don't make a noise.

Well as I have a walled garden it does not bother my neighbour one jot!!

Is the wall soundproof, Nonu ?

How the heck do I know, got to be more sound proof than a fence!
It is about 14 foot high as are most Georgian Town houses grade two listed are.
Never had any complaints

Don't like wind chimes in gardens, thankfully my neighbour doesn't have them.

My neighbours had some wind chimes for a while. One afternoon I was trying to ignore the constant' ting ting 'whilst in my garden, I heard a rather agitated male voice from next door say ' Take those b*****y things down before they drive me completely mad !' Couldn't have said it better myself.

I must admit to liking the gentle sound of wind chimes in a soft breeze but can understand why they annoy some people when they live in close quarters to each other.
The sound is far more acceptable than the noise of lawn mowers/radio's and D.I.Y'ers.

I think it depends on the sound. Some are lovely, gentle and soothing. But some are clanging and discordant. I had some like that which eventually I hurled in the bin one day when they were driving me mad.
I've got some gentle small chimes hanging in a couple of windows and they are soft and soothing.

One wind chime would be one too many for me.

I have one in the porch, but only because my granddaughter made it at school, its lovely

Oo-er. That's a bit of" name dropping" 'nonu !!! Although come to think of it our old house( 18th century farmhouse grade 2 listed) didn't have any walls at all. Thank goodness there were no windchimes nearby ! They may be lovely for those who have chosen to have them but the sound is very intrusive and can be like fingernails on a blackboard. Question of taste. Last dog used to think windchimes were the bell a neighbor's cat wore and got very excited.

nonu Bungalow. Walls round garden but only about 4ft high.

My neighbour used to have a bamboo fountain thing over her pool which filled up with water until the balance went over, the water emptied and the bamboo tapped on something as it tipped back again. That was repetitive and pretty annoying.

I live in a terrace of houses, where next door's wind chime by the front door drove me mad at night. Unfortunately, while she was away on holiday, the hanging cord frayed and 'broke' [guilty emoticon]. It has not been seen or heard since!

My neighbours on either side both have multiple sets of windchimes which drive me nuts, especially as I like to sleep with the window open. It's like hearing bottles being smashed all night. However, as both sets of neighbours are very kind and helpful, I don't feel able to say anything, just grit my teeth.

My former neighbour had a wind chime but I hardly noticed it after a while. I wouldn't dream of inflicting one on my neighbours. I do have one, but as it's also a suncatcher, it hangs inside my window and is only audible when the window is open - certainly not today!
