Well I'm not single rubylady but there has been a joint executive decision at Ainsworth Towers that it's a ridiculous, over-commercialised, hyped-up nonsense which we are happy to ignore!

I don't "get" Valentine's Day. I'm not quite ignoring it as I'm posting on this thread, but that's all the acknowledgement it'll get from me other than a few sighs and groans and wishes that all the hype and crap about it would hurry up and be over. Why is everything so IN YOUR FACE these days?

It's been going for centuries. What's wrong with celebrating love? Or in Ruby's case her happiness for another reason.

Nothing wrong with celebrating love, anya. But the public manifestation of it is commercial crappiness and nothing more. If you like it, enjoy it. I'm sick to the back teeth already of red hearts everybloodywhere. This amused me though.

Let's not turn a thread on Vanetime's day sour, this early on. We all know about commercialisation, so let's take what happiness we can from it for our own loved ones please.

Some of us may not have them with us very much longer.

We have the DGC staying over tonight so DD and her partner can share a romantic meal. He's cooking mussels in white wine and garlic, lucky her.
We've never bought presents for Valentines but we do still buy each other cards.
I remember aged about 13 running down the road in the dark and posting a card through a rather dishy 19-20 year olds letter box, my friend dared me !!

One can express one's love for a person any day and every day. People who really love each other do.

I'm allowed to feel sour about commercialism and I'm allowed to express that sourness.

Oh grumpiness so early in the day. Mr i.am came home from shopping yesterday, with a beautiful bunch of flowers. The unexpected gift and the warmth with which is was given made me smile. They're sitting in the hallway so I see them often - what's not to like. I'm not a fan of the commercialisation of anything and everything but it doesn't stop me enjoying Christmas, Easter or indeed Valentine's day.

Well, I have a card and a small box of chocolates so I'm not complaining!

It's the gross commercialisation of Valentine's Day I object to, like Waitrose selling £20 Valentine's dinners when they normally do a deal for £10. That has certainly not been going on for centuries.

My husband took me out for a meal [sit down fish and chips, my choice] on thursday, as he is working today.

I happened to be in ASDA this year, who had all sorts of things for under a £5.[sweets, fudge, cards etc]

DH had a bad day at work yesterday and stormed home forgetting to pick up the usual card and chocolate from the station. He swore loudly when The One Show mentioned that it was Valentines Day. I am not bothered but always get him a jokey card when I am buying his birthday card (next week).
So this morning he made me cheese on toast for breakfast and has gone off on a vine pruning course at a local vineyard. I am hoping he will bring back a nice bottle for us to enjoy later.

Now happily alone, I remember the excitement of Valentines day when I was in my teens. I was married at 21 and although we only made it through 15 years before splitting up, I remember that one year my then DH put a advert in the Guardian declaring his love for me. I was thrilled to bits.

I have a dozen deep red roses........because I'm worth it!

We've ignored Valentine's Day for years - well over fifty years (married for fifty this year it known one another longer)

But for those who love it - enjoy it!
