Anybody tempted to see this film, got a feeling it does not match the 70`s soft porn films like Emmanuelle.

Sounds all somewhat puerile to me.

In UK it is 18.

There are no very extreme violence or sex scenes in it, which is probably what it is judged on.
To me, it's the acceptance of the dominant-submissive relationship that is shocking.

Yes, I read that its classification is 12 in French cinemas, yet it's 18 in the UK. Other countries seem to vary, but France is the lowest.

Fifty Shades of Grey is on in our local cinema next week and its French title is Cinquante Naunces de Grey .I was surprised to see that the age classification for this film is 12.

Just saw this film. Most of the audience were young women. Heard one tell the usher that she was there to learn how to be romantic. Usher (f) told her she wouldn't learn anything.
Good looking male millionaire gets his sexual kicks by inflicting pain. Besotted, sexually inexperienced young woman goes along with it. Guy seems bewildered to feel attraction to woman but still insists on his rules and his need to inflict physical pain.
Woman finally very distressed by the whole situation and in pain, walks out on him.

Great ending! Unfortunately, we all know it doesn't end there.

The friend with me had read all 3 books, dislikes the story, says in next 2 the story carries on the same with no attempt by the dork to give up his ways, only to subjugate the woman.
Dangerous rubbish indeed.

No it's on dvd series 1-4 and on Sky series 5 this spring. A friend of mine said it's the only reason why he pays for Sky and the only programme that he has to watch when it's on as he can't wait to see it. The books are brilliant, too [jingle has read them]. The scenery is amazing [shot in Iceland, Ireland, Malta and Croatia] and a lot of the actors are classically trained [one reason why they shot it over here]. It's taken off in a way that Star Trek and Doctor Who has in that they have conventions etc. I haven't reached that stage but it's going that way. Since my days in Cornwall I've always loved King Arthur stuff and it's like a science fantasy version of that.

janeainsworth Wed 18-Feb-15 16:12:28

tegan yes, one and the same person. I just got confused

gillybob Wed 18-Feb-15 16:10:34

Oh well in that case Riverwalk I will check my local cinema listings and books seats forthwith. All in the name of research you understand. hmm

Oh that sounds like you are bordering on obsession Tegangrin I will check it out. Is it available on the basic channels as we don't have any fancy Sky box or anything?

gillybob; I've just started on series 4. I try to watch 2 episodes a night but sometimes I just keep going. I was thinking last night that I've now watched 32 one hour episodes [well, more cause I then watch the commentaries and often rewatch the episode]. I've never been less than transfixed and enthralled. But it is very very violent and there are a lot of brothel scenes blush etc. But you CARE so much about the people in the programme that you're on the edge of your seat worrying about them and have to watch the next episode to see what happens to them. The dialogue [some of it taken straight from the book] is superb. I've lost count of how many 'favourite' characters I have.

Ana Wed 18-Feb-15 15:55:55

I'm struggling to find any good reviews for it, apart from the London Evening Standard one. It seems to have averaged 4/10 overall.

Riverwalk Wed 18-Feb-15 15:43:58

It's had good reviews in the national press and the London Evening Standard gave it 4****.

confused

Maybe it's a well-made film despite the script.

gillybob Wed 18-Feb-15 15:02:11

Never watched Game of Thrones Tegan . Infact I thought it as a computer game confused.

I think I might watch 50 Shades when it becomes a £3 bargain basement DVD too.

Tegan Wed 18-Feb-15 14:17:09

If so it's the one thing that might make me watch the film [albeit only on dvd when it works it's way down to the cheap section]. Nowhere Boy was very good. The one clip I've seen of the film looked rubbish. If I want to watch soft porn, violence and sado masochism I'll stick to Game of Thrones which does it with style and eloquence

Tegan Wed 18-Feb-15 14:14:44

Isn't she one and the same person?

janeainsworth Wed 18-Feb-15 13:31:31

Or Sam Taylor-Johnson even blush

janeainsworth Wed 18-Feb-15 13:30:29

The review in the Telegraph said that the film was much better than might have been anticipated, given the dire prose of the book, and that the director, Sam Taylor-Wood, had taken no notice of the author's attempt to take over the film.

I read the book out of curiosity, but am not quite curious enough to see the film or read the sequels.

absentgrandma Wed 18-Feb-15 13:30:03

I'm going to give myself a few more months of 'subbing' Nankate then I'll give self publishing a go. I'm not too much of a technophobe, but it could be an IT challenge too far grin

suzied Wed 18-Feb-15 12:23:33

I read the first and last book , but didn't find it erotic in the slightest. Can't see what the fuss is about. No interest in the film either. If I wanted to read a racy novel I'd go for a Jackie Collins.

gillybob Wed 18-Feb-15 09:33:26

Not sure how anyone would know if anything was rubbish or "worse than rubbish" without even reading a few pages and as for it being "dangerous" confused.

pompa Wed 18-Feb-15 08:36:47

Harrigran, sex in a wheelie bin, don't remember that in the book. grin

GrannyTwice Wed 18-Feb-15 08:31:03

I don't know anyone in RL of any age who has read the book or seen the film. I don't need to read it to know that's it's worse than rubbish and dangerous rubbish at that.

gillybob Wed 18-Feb-15 08:01:57

I have read the first book and about half of the second. Based on what I have read I think the film will be rubbish as there is very little story line except for extremely rich man into kinky sex seduces young woman and they have sex, sex and more sex. Sorry for the spoiler. grin

NanKate Wed 18-Feb-15 07:32:58

Absent have you thought of self publishing as a way of getting your written work on paper ? It is then up to you to try and self publicise, like my friend did. It was hard work but was far better than her book never seeing the light of day.

Sorry I have deviated a bit. smile

harrigran Tue 17-Feb-15 19:22:55

I read the book so that I would know why people were talking about it, it was the most boring and badly written book I have ever read. I will not be going to the cinema to see the film, washing my wheelie bins would be more exciting grin
