A comment that Grannyknot made in another thread about being unable to forgive herself for not confronting boorish and racist behaviour brought back a very uncomfortable memory for me.
When I lived in West Sussex and worked for a building trades employers federation, the woman who had previously done my job came to see her ex-colleagues and we were all sitting in the tea room at break time, listening to the "honoured guest" regaling us with tales of her life overseas.
She had recently married and she and her husband were living somewhere in Africa (I don't recall what country) where he had obtained what appeared to be quite a senior job.
She started to express sympathy for the more junior male employees who were working out there without their wives or girlfriends and she said, with a giggle, that they often had to make use of the "jungle bunnies" for sex. I've never forgotten how stunned I was by this comment but although I was shaking with anger I didn't say anything. I fear it was mostly down to cowardice on my part since I was fairly new to the work team.
Although I had on many occasions before - and have since - raised objections to comments and behaviour of this nature, I still feel ashamed about the way I behaved on that day.
