BT!!!

I am not sure Tanith, I have only ever used BT, but I would want them all to offer a service to check their phone lines, 24/7. For many people, especially those who do not have families living nearby, the phone is a lifeline, my concern was that my friend might have collapsed whilst trying to make a calll for help.

alternativegran would it of been any different if it were any of the other telephone companies?

We had a similar situation a few years ago when on holiday when trying to check up on my mother . The phone was engaged over several hours when we knew this was unlikely. However we were able to obtain the number of the next door neighbour who was able to tell us mum had gone to stay with a friend for a couple of days. When she was back she explained she had taken the phone off the hook as she didn't want anyone to know she was away!!! The exchange did kindly put her right.

I have a friend in her nineties who lives quite near, my daughter had been trying to phone her for over an hour, just got the engaged tone and was concerned. I go round, can hear someone talking but it might be the TV, no answer to the doorbell, then I have a brainwave I will ask BT if she is on the phone.

If only it was that simple, after several rounds of an automated woman, who doesn't understand what I am trying to say, asking questions I am eventually asked if I want to check a number not my own, YES! but all is shut down for the holiday.

What awful service, it's often someone else who notices a fault on the line and for some people, especially if they don't have a mobile, having a working phone line is important. I could have called the police but I don't think my friend would have appreciated a visit just because her phone came come off the hook.
