Anyone else have an 'egg pan'?

And, if anyone does, why?

My egg pan is an old pan that was a wedding present (in the dim and distant past!) and very disreputable but I wouldn't dream of boiling eggs in a normal saucepan - why? Is there some long forgotten reason for it or did I pick it up off Mrs Bucket my mum, who was only doing it to show off to the neighbours?

I have a pan just for boiling eggs in Kitty.I think it's to do with water from the eggshells not being good, but is just something I have always done!

I can't remember the last time I boiled an egg hmm

I've got one. It's small but deep, with a well fitting lid. I wouldn't cook anything else in it as it has hard water marks on the inside. Occasionally I boil the sponge dishcloth in it.

Definitely. DGS has a boiled egg or two every time he is here. I keep one of my milk saucepans for eggs only.

My mother thought egg water gave you warts. So maybe the origin of having a separate pan goes back to some such unfounded superstition.

Jessmmy mum use to say that as well bless her

I don't think I could boil an egg in an ordinary pan now!!

I have a small egg poaching pan which cost 7/6 in 1965 in Halifax Market and is still in use whenever we have poached eggs. I just put half an inch of water in the bottom of the pan, put the 4 cups in the rack on top, add a dab of butter then the egg and put the lid on. Heat on the hob and perfect poached eggs in no time at all.

DS used to play with it a lot as a baby in 1971 "posting" the 4 little individual cups into the slots for ages - he liked that better than the brightly coloured plastic shapes he had to post in an octagonal ball!

Yes, i do have an 'egg pan' but it is really too big for boiling just two eggs, so I use a small stainless steel one if I am doing one or two then give it a good scrub.

Oh dear, perhaps I had better get another small one just for eggs.

I have an egg boiling pan, purely because of all the limescale that builds up on it. I wouldn't want to make a sauce in it without a good scouring of it first, as the dishwasher doesn't get rid of it all.

My Mum always had an egg saucepan but I have never bothered.

What is it with egg poachers and children Gaga? A little friend of DS2 used to come to play and always dived straight into the pan cupboard for the poacher. He was no trouble at all. That poacher entertained him all afternoon!

I don't have a special pan but do have'gold plated' egg spoons. They are small and came free with a magazine years ago (so maybe they are not real gold).

I've go one too.
It moved out of Married Quarters with us in the early seventies. It's a milk saucepan, as we had two, I used one for milk and one for eggs.
When we did the 'out muster' there was only one milk saucepan on the inventory so the MOD chap who was checking us out said we could keep it, I didn't steal it!
It is stamped with an arrow (as everything was) and the date 1966. Still going strong.

My egg poacher stays on my stovetop. Love poached eggs! I recently got another off Ebay they aren't made anymore. I prefer the stainless steel Revereware pan and cups.Easy to keep clean.

I have an egg pan too, had it for years I only use it for eggs or one of those meat puddings that have to be boiled... (disgusting things but OH loves them)..
I don't know why I have an egg pan I have no idea why I started using it.

I know a few people who won`t use a pan that`s had eggs boiled in it for anything else, but I`ve never bothered about it, I use whichever pan is to hand when I boil eggs.

ginny Mon 13-Apr-15 23:03:04

Envious Do you mean the reverware poacher is not made any more ? Others certainly and easy to obtain.. I bought 2 around Christmas time.

harrigran Mon 13-Apr-15 23:52:26

Yes I have a pan that is only used for boiling eggs, wouldn't dream of using it for anything else.

Do you think it is anything to do with enamel pans? When I was a child, my mum used an enamel pan for boiling eggs, and the inside had certainly suffered and couldn't be used for anything else anyway.
We tend to do what our mums did don't we, and so I too have an egg pan, though it is sometimes used for other things!

Thought Mrs Bucket had updated to a separate omelette pan now.

Marelli Tue 14-Apr-15 08:12:07

Any pan will do - depends on how many eggs are needed.

Bez Tue 14-Apr-15 08:21:22

I have always had an egg pan - in my case it is now an old milk pan where the non-stick lining was failing to be non-stick - it shows up all the lime in the water. Six eggs just fit in it nicely - cooked some yesterday as making sandwiches for a friend's 90th birthday party. I poach eggs in a normal frying pan but sometimes use the stainless steel rings if I need them to have neat edges.

I couldn't work out why anyone would need a pan just for eggs. Then as I read, I realised that it seems to be because of hard water marks. As we have very soft water and no such problems that would explain why the need doesn't arise!
It reminded me of the difference between shampooing in London and here at home.
When I first returned from 2 years in the south it took a while to adjust the amount of shampoo needed to avoid gallons of bubbles.
Soft water also makes better tea!
