Thanks so much for all the good wishes,I have finally been to fracture clinc and the consultant says best thing is for the bones to heal without any surgery in his opinion,I could have a replacement shoulder joint but he doesn't think it would work well so is just going to see what happens when I go back on 1st July,the pain is now manageable and getting better by the day the bruising has spread the whole length of the arm and resembles a full sleeve tattoo lol.
It is certainly an older persons injury as the clinic was packed with older people with all manner of broken bones mainly caused by tripping over.

I'm glad you don't need surgery. I had to have three fixaters in my wrist, and three different plaster casts. It took seven weeks in plaster, and then physiotherapy to get back to normal. Hope your recovery runs smoothly.

Oh dear glamma - you have a difficult few weeks ahead I suspect, but also a very good excuse to come on Gransnet instead of doing housework etc. Wishing you a speedy and pain free recovery.

Hope you're better soon. I fell over last Tuesday on a wonky pavement hitting my forehead with some force. A massive lump came up. By that evening I was developing a black eye. The blood behind the lump was drifting down my face and by the next morning I had a purple left eye. Some of it went over my nose to the right eye. I look quite frightening so when going out I wear sunglasses. It's abated somewhat with just a 'bruise' on each cheek bone. I felt quite shaky for a while. It's also a good insight to those people who have a permanent disfigurement.

When I broke my shoulder - mine was the ball joint and the surgeon decided to give me Physio rather tha an operation - it happened in France about 16 years ao - I started the Physio within 48 hours of having the fall - off a moped in my case - I went three times a week for 8 weeks. To start with I just had to keep my fingers moving and the Physio took the sling off and he took the weight of my arm and gently moved it back and fore. This was painful and he only did it for a few minutes at a time to start with and then left me to rest for a bit and then he repeated it.
By the time I returned home to UK I had a lot of movement in my shoulder and the GP was amazed at how much movement i had. I went to the local hospital once a week if the chap could fit me in but it was of little use as all he did was put an ultra sound on the site. But I went to the gym almost every day for a year and did exercises under the supervision of a lady there. I have almost full use of my arm and shoulder and the only thing that might show is that the whole shoulder is slightly more forward than the other and I am conscious of it in some T shirts but I think no one else notices!
When I broke the humerous of the same arm three years ago I did the moving my fingers and taking the weight with the other hand and moving my shoulder straight away and once again I have got full use - the mother of our son's girlfriend is 15 years younger than me and broke her humerous last year and would not go to the physio or do exercises and has extremely poor movement in her arm - cannot raise it even as far as her shoulder - I can put mine completely up. My GP here said I had to continue with the Physio till I could do my bra up behind my back --- which I can do quite easily.
Glam I am sorry you've had this accident and sympathise with you as I know how painful it is - but if they offer you Physio please do it. Later when you are well on the way to being better if you like the water go in a pool and bend your knees and do breast stroke with your arms just under the water - this does help a lot but I found I could not swim at all for some time afterwards as my arm was just not strong enough to support me.
