I got to page 5 then skipped to the last one!

Most of the posters' opinions seem remarkably close to what Gransnetters' would be/have been on past threads.

Loved the bit where someone sugggested that one of the Offended probably didn't remember the 70's and she replied, indignantly, that she was born in 1972...

I saw this yesterday, haven't read it all the way through but I do enjoy a nip over to the other side

I nearly posted about that thread too. I think it's charming. They are so like us really sweet and almost humane.

I started reading from the end and worked backwards to page 7 (I'm left handed and tend to do that a lot, which probably explains a lot about my life ) which was where the less lighthearted posts started. There's always one . . . . .

Just clicked your link and had a brief look but only at the start of it.

I think that people forget that younger people are part a product of their age. So it is never quite comparing like with like. So didnt much like the start of it.

I may read the rest later, but I only lurk on mumsnet occasionally and take mumsnet for what it is.

I spend more time on MN than I do on here. I did post on that thread as I do on many on there. I find you can be far more honest on there than you can here.

Young people are different. So what? I like them. All generations are different. Strange if they turned out like us!
I remember past generations complaining about the young. I was determined not to be one of them.
Yes, there are occasional bits I dont like, but on the whole, I think they are great.

Nuclear fears were very 80s, OP. When the Wind Blows, Two Tribes, Protect and Survive.... When that last little ray of sunshine came out I started putting tinned food, can opener, candles, boxes of matches, spare blankets etc down in the cellar ready for the big day. Oh, I was prepared. I seem to think the advice was to prop up another door against the entrance to your "shelter" and cover it with pillows and quilts for extra protection. I'm sure we'd have been fine.

'bay of pigs' - I was at school and we sat on the steps by the tennis courts waiting for 3 pm to happen (not that we could have done anything about it)

apologies for going over 'to the dark side' - I do not post but they have interesting discussions and lots of them talk a great deal of sense and show admirable intelligence - but there are a few who seem to put a downer on any topic and challenge/shutdown debate

I meant that nuclear fears were 80s as well as 60s. Grannyonce seemed to be questioning the Mumsnetters 80s memories.

I definitely remember the dire warnings of the 80's; with two young children it was scary. I remember discussing with DH whether we really could exist living in the farmhouse cellar, and when on earth would you know it was safe to come out and to what? We couldn't get a radio to work in the cellar so thank goodness it wasn't necessary to find out.

I am watching that thread on Mumsnet but not contributed because I am a grumpy old lady!

there was a further thread on mnet (sorry) bemoaning the antagonism from the 'professionally offended' (which is akin to my 'perpetually offended' description) which I think is spot on.
the sad thing is they all pile in on a thread and shutdown what could be a good topic/debate.

'perpetually offended' is a good description. I think, on the whole, we do become a little more tolerant with age/experience (not mutually exclusive). Trouble is some people just love going off like fireworks at the slightest thing (dare I say put on a bit of a show just for effect).

My Grandma was a great one for 'live and let live' and don't do anything to 'frighten the horses'.....never quite understood the last bit as a child but sort of get it now. Its about basic good manners really....people should be able to have an opinion (as long as not immoral or illegal) we can either have our say or ignore. We did used to have something at school called 'Debating' where a teacher would throw something at us and we could have a jolly good argument but me refereed by said teacher....taught us quite a good lesson about what was a decent discussion and what was just hurling abuse.
Mind you there are the sort that just love to provoke....but that's another story...and there's no point engaging with them.

People are actually allowed to have immoral or indecent opinions though, Hilda!
