I'm opposed to the death penalty and share the concerns expressed by others on this thread about the American system. I'm with jingle (oh dear, never though me and jing could be accused of being a gransnet cult ) - that's a whole other thread. This thread is contentious and challenging enough without it wandering off on to such a significant other subject.

A different kind of audience. For a different reason.

Not sure that they are 'fairly convicted' in America, with the majority of them being black. And there is an audience when they are executed, albeit a small one.

The beheadings and killings are pretty much randomly indiscriminate (journalists, women speaking out of turn stoned alive naked) as is murdering over 500 people trying to flee IS.

Very different to capital punishment in USA for fairly convicted criminals.

There is no balanced view of Islam in the way it is adhered to in many countries.

jbf you brought up executions when I attempted to present a more balanced view of Islam. I wasn't discussing US executions but how one aspect or action can be used to condemn something when the reality is so much more complex.

Should we really be saying, "look at those lovely Muslims, wanting to execute that young person because he harmed a book"?

Which is best? both are abominable. I just wonder that people are so quick to condemn something without looking at things which happen on their own doorstep and how that links into our perception of other people.
There's some Christian phrase about seeing the mote in your brother's eye and missing the beam in your own. I think it probably applies here.
I'm not saying that the muslim punishments are right only that we shouldn't look at a single aspect of something and use that to condemn it.
Of course the US death penalty shouldn't be used to blacken a whole country any more than the actions of extreme administrations should be taken as the norm for a religion that has millions of followers.

And let's not forget that quite often little or no reason is given for the beheadings, it's jusst propaganda.

Which is it best?! For a prisoner to be allowed to go down every possible legal road, even if it takes years, or for the prisoner to be taken out immediately after sentence, to the local viewing area, and the stoning/hanging carried out with the local population "encouraged" to watch on the basis of, "this will be you if you don't toe the line"?

I mean in the death sentences carried out in the U.S. and those carried out in some Muslim countries.

Why is it a different subject? I am saying Islamic states are not the only regimes where brutal punishments take place. But they are the focus of media attention that presents a biased view of a religion

They don't encourage onlookers in the US, simply to put the fear of Allah into them. And they don't allow years of legal proceedings before the sentence is carried out.

I don't condone the U.S. Death sentence, but that is another topic entirely.

jbf I didn't say it was perfect. But there were 17 executions in the USA last year, none of which received the publicity that the beheadings do.
These things are the responsibility of the state which organises them and muslim states aren't the only offenders
