George W. Bushisms and other decimated words

The one that crops up again and again is phased used instead of fazed. I presume spellchecker lets it through because it is a word, but you'd think a proof reader would pick it up. I'm beginning to notice people talking about deers and sheeps as well.

I've noticed that the word 'defiantly' is increasingly popping up when the writer clearly means 'definitely'. I can only imagine it's predictive text attempting to make sense of the misspelling 'definately'

Pulchritude is another one that sounds like the opposite of what it actually means phoenix.

My friend had a Greek boyfriend who used to say ( after a shower) that he had " washed his hairs".

Reminds me of an Italian friend who thought 'toothpaste' was a ridiculous word and it should be 'teethpaste' as it isn't for just one tooth. Logical really!

"Enervating" is an odd word, I always think it sounds a bit like what it is actually the opposite of! (apologies for grammar, I need coffee!)

Hilda I know! I tried using "ert" in Words with Friends (Scrabble app) and it wouldn't accept it, but surely it's the opposite of "inert"

Here's something that amused me,

'Undoubtably' and 'unindated'. I've also noted confusion between 'flawed' and 'floored', and 'defuse' and 'diffuse'. This thread could run and run!

shysal I do agree about "slippy". The weather forecasters on local radio use this all the time in the winter and it drives me to distraction!

Similarly, hildaj, my father always used to say perculator instead of percolator. Conversely, he would say ridicolous. And, like you, I didn't like to correct him because, well, you didn't correct your parents, did you? Not in those days

A good friend who is not good at spelling or grammar makes some amusing errors in texts.
One that I would really like to point out to her but don't have the nerve is I throught he was. Not a typo, as she does it every time.

My father always talked about a redchester when he was talking about a register. Because he was my father, I never liked to correct him!

I think confab is the short form of confabulation. This is a word used in psychiatry to describe a faulty or misinterpreted memory. People with dementia, and certain other psychiatric disorders will make up a story, when they cannot remember clearly. I have heard some wonderful confabulations in my time on the wards.
What really annoys me, is when people say "he should of" when they actually mean "he should have".

I do use "confuddled" from time to time, as a portmanteau word, confused and befuddled. I assume that the person I'm speaking to realises that, although it is of course dangerous to assume anything!

Yes, I use conflab too. If you say it's acceptable, shysal, I shall carry on irregardless.

Not guilty to most of them, but I have been known to have the odd conflab. Just looked it up and it seems to be an acceptable alternative to confab, a word unknown to me!
A pet hate of mine is slippy (slippery).

However, I doubt if any of us has ever said "I know how hard it is to put food on your family".

Don't misunderestimate these!
