Cardi nearly caused road accident!

The problem with any backless footwear when driving is that it is possible for the shoe to slip and the rear end of the sole to catch under the pedal and make it impossible to press it down. If this happens with the brake pedal then there could be a serious accident.

I drive fine in my birkenstocks, and always used to in wellies when I had horses and sheep, but I did have a bit of a scare when riding pillion on a motorbike wearing wooden soled slip on clogs. As we leaned into the bend, my clogs made contact with the tarmac and ended up being "planed" by about 3/4 of an inch!

I'm amazed at what can cause accidents !!!!

I used to, and still do in taxis, take off my scarf and now my cross body bag before we set off as a safety measure. And my bra occasionally, it depends on how handsome the driver is!

I often drive short distances wearing my berkies.

Wow! I have driven (badly) in Spain though not in flip-flops. But I never knew it was against the law. Where does one get this kind of information?

If you are planning to drive in Spain - don't do so in flipflops - its illegal!

My DD drives in flipflops. And sometimes barefoot. She has not had a problem.
Having looked up the Highway Code, there dont seem rules about it, or a problem.

I used to drive in flip flps not a good idea. Walking boots are not a good idea either but I do do that at times.
When I go on a Geology trip it often involves getting in and out of cars at different locations and getting boots on and off each time is a pain. Walking boots are really too clumsy to be safe.
Scholl sandals are not to be recomended either.
I see Anno has also tried that one, not that anyone seems to wear them these days.

I was once driving through a London no stopping zone, in rush hour, wearing leather boots with chunky heels. The clutch be game wedged between the heel and sole.

The only way to drive was to lift my whole leg up and down with the clutch, until I found somewhere to stop.

I have disliked driving in boots, ever since.

I wouldn't have driven in East Africa in wellies though ;)

I rode my motorbike in Thailand in sandals like Clarks Playdeks.

I'll put my hand up as someone who drives in wellies occasionally. And in hiking boots more often than in wellies. And sometimes in Crocs.

When I was young and over-confident in East Africa I drove barefoot or in flip-flops or in Scholls wooden sandals. Don't think I had any other kind of foorwear apart from wellies and who drives in those! Luckily the VW Beetle had a very long accelerator pedal which fitted my foot almost exactly.

Luckygirl I have had several words with DD on the subject, but she insists she's safe to drive in them!

Scary moment for you Katek. I sometimes catch a baggy type sleeve on the shaker style door handles in the kitchen, usually when carrying a mug of tea, but that is hardly in the same danger league as what you did.

My DD once took a taxi from London to here - S Wales border! - and when she got out of the car I saw that the female driver was wearing shoes with no backs - I was horrified, and very glad that I did not know this before DD arrived home safely. It is hard to imagine that she could not see the potential danger.

Ana - can you have "words" with your DD? - what a worry for you.

I suspect in the case of an accident the police and insurance company would have something to say about the suitability of flip flops.

DD insists that she can drive OK in flip-flops. The very idea fills me with horror!
