Strange ears

Lately I've noticed that my ears are folding over when I lay down on my pillow at night. They never used to do this- are they getting floppier/larger as I age do you think?

Grannyknot Sat 08-Aug-15 10:11:26

tt that is indeed strange and would freak me out shockgrin

I do think ears get bigger with age, and if you google there is lots - www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2013/jul/17/big-ears-grow-as-we-age

I'm off to check my nose now! (My ears are tiny).

BTW does everyone know that you can just type a question into Google (it has been improved with time) e.g. "Do ears get bigger with age?" In other words you don't have to faff with key words.

Indinana Sat 08-Aug-15 10:19:41

I've always done that Gk, it just always seemed more intuitive and actually quicker to type a whole sentence than to faff with key words!

Ana Sat 08-Aug-15 10:24:04

Yes, and google will often very helpfully anticipate your query (sometimes hilariously wrongly!)

It is true, our ears and noses continue to grow as we age. My DH always had big ears and now, as he is losing his hair they look even bigger. He hates them, by unfortunately there is nothing he can do about it.

hildajenniJ Sat 08-Aug-15 10:29:21

I did type but, honestly!

Apropos of nothing on this thread except ears, I watched 'Not Going Out Outtakes' when I had insomnia last week and Timothy Vine's ears are amazing. He can wiggle them up and down at will! Can anyone else do that?

Elegran Sat 08-Aug-15 12:47:43

I can't, but my dad could.

rosesarered Sat 08-Aug-15 14:16:01

Yes, ears do grow as we age. Also, I can't take my eyes off Alexander Armstrong's ears when he is on TV .
My ears used to be quite small, now they seem normal.

petra Sat 08-Aug-15 15:21:16

I'm stuffed then. My ears are quiet big as it is. They'll be calling me Dunbow in a few years.

downtoearth Sat 08-Aug-15 18:35:04

Ears, nose, all same size, shame same cant be said for feet, tummy, and Buttgrin

Ana Sat 08-Aug-15 18:45:43

Agree about Alexander Armstrong's ears, roses! They seem to have a life of their own...grin

I don't know about ears growing as you age but I have the weirdest ears I have ever seen, they do not have rims which means I get sore cartilage when I rest my head on a pillow.

rosesarered Sat 08-Aug-15 19:26:27

Harrigran, that sounds very painful, could you construct something from cotton wool pads to wear to sleep?I immediately felt my own ears for rims on reading your post, and of course they are there. What do doctors say about it, you must have asked them over the years?

harrigran Sat 08-Aug-15 19:41:23

Do you know rosesarered I have never consulted a GP about my ears. My mother told me that if I went missing I would be easy to identify because she didn't know anyone else with ears like mine. I wonder if some clever person could make a very soft rubber mould that would help.

annodomini Sat 08-Aug-15 20:00:14

I have heard that earlobes grow longer as one ages and I think mine are a bit longer than they once were, but it happens so imperceptibly that I can't be sure. I don't wear heavy earrings any more as they might lengthen the lobes!

Nelliemoser Sat 08-Aug-15 20:17:04

We could all take selfies of our ears and post them on here. wink

Luckygirl Sat 08-Aug-15 22:12:16

My DD has always been able to pack her ears up - i.e. screw up the outer bits and stuff them in her earhole and get them to stay there! Why - I hear you ask - would you wish to do that?

Don't ask me - I first noticed her doing it when she was about one - she walked towards me and I thought: "Heavens above the child has a deformed ear and it has taken me a whole year to notice it!" Then she popped it out - big sigh of relief.

She still does it - strange girl.

harrigran, I'm sure your GP could refer you for help with your problem. My MIL had a soft rubber piece custom-made by an NHS prosthetics technician to help with a malformation of her nose. It looked amazing, but unfortunately she rarely wore it!

rosesarered Sun 09-Aug-15 09:31:23

I would definitely see your GP Harrigran, and ask about it.As Maggie says( above) something could be made that would give some comfort . worth a try!
Luckygirl, your post made me laugh , ' packing up' ears .grin

Definitely, ears do get bigger with age. I don't know what prompted me to suddenly remember this weird fact, but I do know my Mum's ears got bigger. So, this year I decided to grow my hair longer, to cover them, after years of short spiky cuts. Know what? My hair has decided that it now has a bit of a wave or kink to it, where before it was pipe water straight, odd.

HappyNan1 Sun 09-Aug-15 11:20:52

According to the audiologist I saw ears don't continue to grow as we get older they drop or droop, head south and only appear to grow. I always thought they continued growing.

Alea Sun 09-Aug-15 11:23:59

Would I be very cruel to say that were Alexander Armstrong to dress in green with a pointy hat and sit on a toadstool, his ears would be perfect?grin
