I went shopping today and I bought.......

just opened my email and noticed Gransnet email....guess where I had planned to go today...charity shops. The rain is torrential outside and I just didn't want to spend a day indoors...as I live alone and have no family for hundreds of miles, I make sure I go out each day to do something different...when cash is short and you feel like a little treat, hunt through the charity shops, it may be a book, beads, clothing, a jigsaw puzzle or even an unusual ornament it becomes a personal treat..i was so pleased o read how many of us enjoy this pastime.

Good idea, celialilian, and welcome to the forum, as I haven't seen your name before. we are not only doing something nice for ourselves but giving a bit ot Charity and recycling as well, always good.

Got a lovely remote control for y GS yesterday from a charity shop he now thinks I am the bees knees

I love charity shops too as I never know what treasures are there waiting for me to find them. Yesterday we went into our local one and DH got a dinner suit for £8. (His previous one didn't fit any more and hadn't been worn for years but we are going to a 'do' soon.)
I have two 'best' coats, a black Planet one which was £6 and a most wonderful Irish herringbone tweed which was the massive sum of £30 but is like new and would have cost loads more. Both, of course, from charity shops.

I had a charity shop morning too! I got a heavy hooded cardigan for £7, a pair of new Hotter shoes £7, a pair of trousers and top for my granddaughter £3, a bag of wool £1.50. Oh happy days. I love charity shops.

This morning I bought a small cabin sized case for £2.50. Great for a weekend break. We buy nearly all our books from charity shops, the only thing is , parting with them again. But, we are decorating soon(ish) and I yearn to be minimalist. It will never happen, but earlier this week we gave away loads of paperbacks to a lady whose bell ringing group are going to have a fund raising event, and this afternoon, all my collection of Dick Francis books are off to a new home. I love charity shops!

It must be lovely to be a standard size. At 4 foot 11 and 7 stone I can never find anything to fit in charity shops. Although I have bought a handbag and lovely scarf. I love my kindle so never buy books.

Some days all the clothes I'm wearing, except my underwear, have come from charity shops. I love them and it's a great way of re-cycling and saving the planet.

I love charity shops too. I find it very difficult to pass one by.

I buy lots of toys for when GC visit then recycle them back and begin again. I also buy scarfs, handbags and books. If I'm with DH he huffs and puffs but ends up rootling about to. Is rootling a word or one I just made up?

Apart from a fancy waistcoat for GD who needed one for a school play, I have never bought anything from a charity shop. Please tell me I am not on my own.

You are not on your own, but you are really missing out! I have some amazing clothes - a long silk evening suit from Monsoon, for £7, some really lovely jeans, I do such a lot of gardening that I am the only person I know who manages to wear out fleeces, so I often buy replacements from charity shops. They are the only place where you can get a real leather handbag for a reasonable price now, too.

However what sent me round half a dozen of them not long ago was electrical/battery-operated children's toys, the sort that play a tune or notes or sounds when you press something and send fear into every parent when they see the item shown on the box . DS was given a project to write a piece of music using something you wouldn't expect to see making that sort of sound, so he was taking them all apart and re-wiring them, then writing pieces of music that would work with the sounds that he could produce. As he worked his way through about ten of them and managed to break most of them, I shudder to think what it would have cost if he had had to pay full price.
