Cheeky question...but I'm intrigued when I keep reading about the property market gone bonkers. We paid £23000 in 1981 for a 2 bed flat in north London. Goodness knows what it's worth now... If only we'd been in a position to keep it!

We paid £2,250 for a 2 bedroomed semi bungalow in North Yorkshire in 1963 and were panicked to have to pay an extra £20 for a drop kerb to the drive at the side of the property. Our families were convinced that we would end up in dire straits lumbering ourselves with a mortgage and my FIL offered to put in a word with a builder he worked for to rent us a flat he owned. Fortunately, we stuck to our plan to buy, found it hard to manage with a growing family (2 daughters) on a single wage and sold up in 1967 to move to Zambia, where DLH's job prospects were much better. I think we were both bitten by the travel bug, and TBH we never recovered. Although I cannot claim to have made any money out of the sale of any of our various homes in different countries, I would not change a thing. My memories are priceless.

My first flat in Edinburgh was £1400 in 1969. It was a little one bedroom with the bonus for ex DH of overlooking the local football ground!! Think they're now selling for £100,000 upwards.

We paid £18k in 1972. That was 3 x husband's salary in mortgage plus £6k he had saved. We are still here and similar ones now go for an average of £850k. London suburb near tube. We almost bought a house 3 years earlier when they were going for £5k. Friend nearby bought similar in 1989 and paid £29k.
