We paid £2,250 for a 2 bedroomed semi bungalow in North Yorkshire in 1963 and were panicked to have to pay an extra £20 for a drop kerb to the drive at the side of the property. Our families were convinced that we would end up in dire straits lumbering ourselves with a mortgage and my FIL offered to put in a word with a builder he worked for to rent us a flat he owned. Fortunately, we stuck to our plan to buy, found it hard to manage with a growing family (2 daughters) on a single wage and sold up in 1967 to move to Zambia, where DLH's job prospects were much better. I think we were both bitten by the travel bug, and TBH we never recovered. Although I cannot claim to have made any money out of the sale of any of our various homes in different countries, I would not change a thing. My memories are priceless.
