Does anyone know.......? Vinegar smell

Can't really help with the vinegar problem, but I suppose everyone knows that bi-carb is magic for just about everything else? I used to use it by the ton when my boys were small as it is especially good removing the odour of vomit.

Any ideas for getting rid of the dreadful smell of milk spilled in the car.
DH did not notice. When I noticed a few days later it was disgusting it had gone underneath the mat. I have tried various things but nothing seems to shift it.Febreze does not work on it.
I would be grateful for any help

The two worst smells ever IMO a cauliflower which did a runner from the shopping to wedge itself under a carseat and a bag of smoked mussels left under the driving seat of a hire car in Seattle. I don't really mind the chutney smell. It makes me feel I'm turning into Mrs Tittlemouse.

philocath Bicarbonate of soda, it works for vomit as well.

I read somewhere that if you want to sell your house quickly, then put on the coffee pot and toast some cinnamon lightly in a pan before the viewers come. I suppose you could make some cinnamon cookies, but that could mess up the kitchen

Fishy smells? Our local Morrisons offer an 'oven bag' service. The fish is sealed in an oven proof bag with pats of your preferred butter, plain, garlic, lemon etc. Brilliant, and no charge!

Isn't bi-carb amazing? I impressed DH by getting scratches off the car yesterday by rubbing with it. It also gets stains off your teeth if you are a red wine or black coffee drinker.

A bit belatedly, I cook my chutney in a slow cooker overnight in the garage,it confines all odours -but you do require a garage and a powerpoint

Annabel, that's a brilliant idea, thank you. I have a slow cooker, an outhouse and a power point, can't wait for the next batch now!

Katek I burn a candle nearby when cooking fish, I was told it takes the smell as it burns , it seems to work.
I have no garage, no slow cooker and no fruit trees so will have to hope my neighbour makes too much chutney again this year or rely on the farmers market !

As another lover of microwaved skippers, I I've found that bicarbonate of soda on a damp dish cloth works a treat for zapping fishy pongs.

Sainsbury's do fish in an oven bag with the butter of your choice too.

I burn white sage incense sticks, bought from the internet, very cheap. Not only deals with smelly cooking e.g.kippers but also is said to "cleanse" the air i.e. bad vibes etc.

Alea I've also experienced that horrible realisation that the smell of curry I'd been turning my nose up at was actually coming from my raincoat!

*Annabel17" Does using a slow cooker for making chutney allow enough of the liquid to evaporate? It took hours for mine to reduce.
I now want to make some more chutney just because I get that feeling good factor.

Off to make several portions of red lentil dal to go into the freezer instead. It's one of my stand by meals.

We live only 7 miles from Europe's biggest white fishing port so tend to buy very fresh fish. Maybe that's the problem....it's too fresh!! Will maybe try (or DH will) some of the fish in a bag and see what difference it makes.

We keep being told by a local fishmonger that very fresh fish doesn't smell; that fish from the supermarket smells because it is old, unlike theirs.

However, I have never noticed a difference.

Has he been to a fish market??!? The smell is dreadful.

I've stopped using mine because the whole house used to smell of casserole for days after I'd actually made it...

Well I have not been put off by vinegar smells. I just opened my last pot of home made tomato chutney from 2011.
The damson chutney I made last week will take about three months to mature. I should have made a smaller quantity of that.

I am now thinking of doing a straight tomato chutney, and or an apricot chutney. Looking online there is not much you can't make chutney with.
I think I might be addicted to making preserves.

I always used to have to run past the fish quay at Whitby, where groups of women would sit gutting the fish. It stank to high heaven, yet the fish couldn't have been fresher.

Eleothan, I once realised on a bus that the awful smell of cat wee was coming from my umbrella.
