There is no shame in not easily understanding speech that's very different in pronunciation from what you're used to. A lot of even home grown accents are very broad, vowel sounds are differnet, glottal stops more frequent than one's used to, etc. I often don't understand my own daughter and have to ask her to repeat what she has said. She sometimes speaks with the local Scottish accent (consonants dropped all over the place, vowels different from what we say at home, more elision of words, etc). If she slows down and articulates I can understand but at full speed, no chance. Just saying.

btw jingl- some of the most beautiful and wild parts of the uk are covered with really ugly prefabs- called caravan parks- that are unused for large parts of the year- not saying it is a good idea (it's not imho). Where I lived in East Leics there was several lovely wild areas which were previously and temporarily used for POW camps and Polish refugees - all gone back to wilderness now.

and other parts are covered with mile upon mile of pollytunnels so we can eat strawberries year round. I'd personall prefer to stick to tasty, natural strawberries in season (irrelevant? yes, but just to say they are choices). As said in Surrey there are so many golf courses and more opening- and it is a price war- some will go to the wall- and nature will very slowly take over again- and hopefully the birds and bees, unless they've all disappeared by then).

I emailed him a couple of weeks ago and he assured me that plans were being discussed.
Like you, I'm in Scotland and support our government's stand.
I'm sure that we have similar accommodation standing empty.
I worry that if a few families are placed in flats in outlying housing estates where significant problems exist, there might be more resentment than support.

I must say, having spent time visiting Welsh hospitals over the past few years, both as patient and visitor I am always surprised at the number of 'home-grown' Welsh staff, doctors, nurses, admin, etc, working in them.

If you get rid of the polytunnels and strawberries you will deprive farmers of an income and many workers of their jobs.
Although I will agree they are a blot on the landscape, this is farming land, you can't just take it and build on it.
Increased populations require more food - ok, not necessarily strawberries but vegetables, potatoes - if necessary the land could be used to produce foodstuffs more essential than strawberries.
Why do many people never think where their food comes from, it doesn't just arrive on the shelves from space.
