Standoff

Another one now. I see the Daily Mail got straight to the nub of the problem: tattoos and ginger hair.

The only time we have been involved in a stand off was on a narrow farm road in Belgium, where we, in a Mini, met the biggest turkey I have ever seen in my life. In full feather, it almost filled the width of the road. It sat in front of us and refused to move when we drove towards it, in fact it ran at the car at one point! I said to DH " get out and shoo it!" He said "No bloody fear!" And we reversed back up the track the way we had come, pursued by the bird, until we reached the junction!

I saw that clip on Facebook too, and echo Nelliemoser's opinion.
I also wondered unworthily if the whole thing was a set-up?

This nearly happened to me on Saturday when I was driving over a narrow bridge at the same time as a man in a big car coming in the other direction. We both stopped and eyeballed each other. Then another car came up behind me and my adversary gave up and reversed. Confrontation avoided.

What bloody selfish prats the pair of them. They should be ashamed of the themselves. I have no sympathy at all.

If you can't reverse carefully out of that, you should get someone else to guide you or assist you. However if you can't reverse when needed IMO you are not safe to drive. A reverse out of that tunnel is far easier than parking.

I have been in a stand-off on a country lane. I get pretty p****d of when a car coming towards me can see me (I can see him/her so no question about it) and is right by a passing place, but does not pull in and just ploughs on straight at me, expecting me to stop and reverse to a passing place behind me.

On one occasion this involved me backing round a blind bend on the one-track lane. I was so annoyed that I just got a book from the passenger seat and sat and read it till he reversed to the passing place. Stroppy c*w, that's me! I had/have never done such a thing before or since.

It happens all the time on these lanes - some people do not even slow down when another car is coming - they just assume the other person will stop and reverse.

My brother, who is an unbelievable petrol-head and drives thousands of miles all round the world, is terrified driving our lanes!

I got one chap very irate because I wouldn't reverse when we met on a narrow country road. He was in a small car and I was driving a pick up truck and had no intention of reversing it round a blind bend. For once size did matter and I won!

If he is that worried about reversing maybe he shouldn't be driving at all. Why she couldn't take the high ground and back up thinking " stupid man " is beyond me .

It's all narrow lanes and high banks where I live and I scarcely ever drive anywhere without reversing. It's no big deal. The more you do it the easier it is. It is also very hilly and the general rule is the car going uphill takes priority. I used to have to go up a hill leaving work and often reversed several times a day for large vehicles or people who didn't seem to be able to do it. It helps to have a small car.
The woman would only have had to go a few feet. Very petty to insist on having right of way and hold up everyone else. (I watched it with no sound as DH is snoozing in his chair, but I assume that's what was happening.)

Why didn't they just call the police?

I look on it as karma. If I let someone in front of me or similar then maybe I'll find a space when I need to park. What goes around comes around!

I pride myself on NOT being a selfish driver, often letting people in to join traffic, or standing back to let others turn right etc.

I do it in the hope that others will do the same, a bit like letting someone go ahead of me in the supermarket if they only have a few items.

He was a rubbish reverser unless he was kidding. They didnt even have to reverse far though he had big trouble.

DD3 lives near this tunnel and I have driven through it a number of times. Although he should have been able to reverse it would have been far easier for her to do so as he would have had to reverse round a difficult corner and she just had to go straight backwards. Pathetic on both counts. Maidenhead is a nightmare at present with roadworks and traffic lights supposedly controlling the one way systems. It's actually a small one, only 2 seater!

Now, my turn to put my head above the parapet. The woman had right of way, and the gentleman's reason for not reversing because he was afraid of having an accident was (IMO) flawed on 2 counts, firstly, with that number of people around, someone could have seen him back safely, secondly, even if you are not particularly fond of reversing, you should be able to do it when needed.

Happens around here a lot. Though not for as long. 5 minutes is average.

The old chap was much further in to the tunnel. The woman should have given way as she saw him coming.

Similar happened to me but I had right of way. The fellow was in a top of the range Range Rover and was calling me all of the racist names in the book. I was in a Nissan Micra and decided that it would be an easier life for everybody if I reversed back a fair distance.
