Songs which make you cry

Oh so many do that to me and Dance With My Father Again is right up there. So much so that if it comes on my iPod I sometimes have to skip it if I think I might weep. Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill as well. In classical music Casta Diva by Maria Callas does it. It's sometimes played as background music in films and TV dramas and I just want to hear the music and never mind the film!

Actually, gran5up, Kathleen Ferrier's 'What is Life' always makes me giggle.

My best friend and I had been chosen to perform it in a school concert. I was going to play the piano and she would be singing. On the day, however, she developed a sore throat so we swapped.

Not well rehearsed, were doing OK until she made a mistake, panicked and rushed the ending managing to finish without me. I don't know how I managed to swallow the giggles that were threatening to explode and I really milked the drama of the last few notes - even though there was no more accompaniment.

Our music teacher was sitting in the front row rolling her eyes. We were never asked to do anything again.

Always makes me feel emotional, don't know why?!

So many songs, particularly anything which reminds me of my late parents who died quiet young. My (very) disabled son singing Away in a Manger when he heard another child playing it on the cornet. Songs from happier easy going youthful times. I am even weeping at all the memories on here of people I don't even know.

Noel Coward wrote a heart-wrenching song called "If Love Were All" which at one stage summed up my life .... especially the line "I believe that since my life began the most I've had is just a talent to amuse" - still brings tears.

As does "The Humming Chorus" from Madame Butterfly and any brass band playing "Abide With Me".

With a nod to forthcoming Remembrance Day, Bryn Terfel singing Arthur Somervell's "The lads in their hundreds". The words come from A Shropshire Lad and are very moving. There is a line "...and carry back bright to the coiner the mintage of man..." which I always find very moving.

Sorry I've just remembered Carly Simon singing "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning" - gorgeous and sad and and brings back some memories.

The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics and Dance with my Father by Luther Van Dros as they both remind me of my Dad. Also anything from Les Miserables.

Lara's theme from Dr. Zhivago, '' Somewhere my love'' has me dissolving into tears. And Richard Strauss ''Four last songs'' - I love them all equally, and that wonderful 'Variations of a theme of Thomas Tallis'' by vaughan Williams. Oh dear, could go on and on! May come back later.

So many! - But for me, the ultimate tear-jerker probably has to be Eva Cassidy's "I know you by heart". (And any children singing "Away in a Manger".....)

Then there`s "Bright Eyes", by Art Garfunkel, it came on the radio the morning after my beloved 12 year old cat, Patch, died. It was back in 1981, but it still starts me off every time I hear it. By any other artist it doesn`t affect me, just Art Garfunkel.

As a two-year old, I was fostered.
My mother visited me from time to time and, on her last visit, taught me to sing, " You are my Sunshine."

The last line, " Please don't take my Sunshine away from me." still makes me cry, because it gives me hope that she loved me at least a little bit.

I never saw her again.

Leonora47, I feel for you as the song that always makes me cry is in a similar context.
It is 'Softly as I leave you,'by Matt Monroe.
When I was 9yrs old and my brother was almost 2yrs old, my mother left my brother sleeping in his cot and walked away from him to take her own life.
I only have to hear 'Softly as I leave long before you wake' and I think of the dreadful state she must have been in as she left her sleeping child in his cot.
I am now in my 70's and my brother in his 60's but it still hurts. I'm crying now as I have never got over losing her.
Then Matt Monroe also took his own life. If both Matt Monroe and my Mum had only pulled through they would have been so very much loved.

Dance With My Father is my no. 1 weepie. Mine died when I was 12, but I still remember him dancing with me in his arms. Also The Living Years, I Hope You'll Dance,and Boz Scaggs singing High Sierra. I love Fields Of Gold and Waterloo Sunset, but luckily they don't make me cry, though children singing almost anything do. Abide With Me reduces me to a quivering wreck.

A bit OTT I know but my partner used to sing Love Me Tender to our old cat. She used to go weak at the paws and roll on her back. Now that she's no longer with us I feel quite tearful when I hear it.
