I googled and it seemed to have been something to do with winter tyres not being suitable for the roads if the temperature is above 7 degrees.

Any excuse? or a valid reason?

Over the winter of 2010/11 we did hear reports of some insurers increasing premiums or remarkably even refusing cover if winter tyres are fitted. As a result we recommend talking to your insurer if you are considering fitting winter tyres.

Absolutely determined not to enter the fray over winter tyres but it's not so much getting the tyres on but getting them balanced afterwards. As the steward of the cars it always ended up as my job. I think ,but I Am a total ignoramus about cars, that winter tyres are not a good idea for normal roads or so the nice AA man told me

The flower spike has just suddenly appeared this week!

Wow, red hot pokers in Nov! Although we have two clumps they haven't flowered since late Sept.early Oct.
This is the first year that primroses have flowered so late.Have to get used to no flowers in the garden now, until the snowdrops .

There is a red hot poker flowering in my garden (just the one bloom). Perhaps I should go and warm my hands on it!

At least the mild weather has taken us to the third week in November, which is amazing.I would like a sprinkling of snow for Christmas Day, just so the trees look wonderful, but no more than that.

Some of the hydrangea heads were still pink on Saturday; now they are all brown.

Our first frost of the Winter! goodbye poppies ( shrivelled) so long delphiniums, adios primroses. Still, only about four weeks until Christmas, so they didn't do badly.

All the cars have frosty coats here in Stockport tonight but we have had no snow. Lots of scraping sounds in the morning I think.

Mine was in North Northumberland, roses, when my eldest son was a year old. Over the winter too, a bad winter, lots of thick snow, but we moved pretty quickly, to somewhere with a bathroom and central heating.
Didn't have a car then so we didn't need winter tyres.

Minus 5, minus 6 in the North- and 1 in London- so consistently below 7- stay safe.

Looking at a snowy country scene is beautiful, but if you are older and have to trudge through it to the shops, especially up hills, then it's no fun at all.
