Lego storage ideas please

We had an old flat king size sheet that the children used to upturn their Lego on. At the end of the play all we had to do was pick up the corners and tip it back into the storage container. Sheet came in nicely for tents & dens too.

Bought a great plastic box from Dunhelm which has lots of small compartments. The GC keep all the small fiddly bits in it and the bricks in a storage crate.

We keep ours in an old suitcase. Jumble-tumble-tastic.

The thing about Lego these days is that it comes in kits.
At one time it was just a box of Lego that you could make all kinds of things with.

The worst place to store it is in the carpet. Ouch! I was finding it for ages after DGS had been to stay, even though I thought I had vacuumed after they went home.

You can store it as efficiently as you like, but several weeks after the DGC go home we still find the stuff lurking under the rug, under the chairs and behind the pot plants, no matter how detailed the post-visit search has been and how many times the sweeping and hoovering have been done!

People sometimes miss the point of Lego I feel; part of the fun is searching for the piece you want in a pile of jumbled bricks, teaches hand/eye co-ordination, patience etc. Boys especially are very quick to say they can't find something and I always regarded looking for a vital bit of Lego a useful skill-my DS certainly loved his HUGE trunk full of Lego. Tip-keep all the instruction booklets carefully in a file as a rainy day treat was to remake favourite models from scratch.

Oh yes eGJ! That's ideal storage I think. Santa's bringing more Lego so I'm going to order one right away.

Don't you just love it though when they're happily engrossed with making and creating?

35 litre Very Useful Boxes are perfect as you can get trays with various grid to fit in which makes sorting and storing wonderful! have used these for years and they keep ALL sorts of things sorted. The Wrapping paper one is great too; it has emerged with all rolls safe and ready for use!

Trouble is is when you visit the site you find heaps of boxes which are great for craft ideas. Gave GS his own assorted box all with items re needed for great craft!

Bought online, flat pack with the option to add wheels which DS did. Ikea stock a similar item.

Thank you for the ideas. Harrigran, I love the piece of furniture idea with a display area on top. It looks a bit like school furniture; is it from a retail outlet? It's finding the room for it though.

We have a big yellow Lego storage box which is useful, but the pieces all just get jumbled. I bought 2 workmen's tool boxes and glued a piece of Lego to each section indicating which pieces go where. Good idea in theory! I'm very attracted to whenim64's cutlery trays stacked inside a chest.

I don't know about a dustpan and brush, I've felt like just hoovering them all up at times! A bit drastic, so I'm going to try the chest with cutlery trays.

In Aldi this morning I saw painted (pink or blue) plywood chests with domed lids like an old treasure chests. They're about 2' wide x18" tall plus lid.

My DD keeps all the DGC's Lego in one garden trug. A large yellow one with two handles. It all gets thrown in together and the boys fish among it for the peices they need. It all finished up scattered across the floor, but they have a dustpan with Lego written across it in large letters, to scoop it all up again! Mum or Dad usually get that job, or visiting Granny

GC have this wooden unit on wheels with slide in plastic crates, the top doubles as a work surface for models.

Wilkinsons and The Range have children's storage boxes in various designs, including one that has Lego all over it. Think they're about £4. They'll hold thousands of pieces. DiL puts plastic cutlery trays inside to sort the shapes or colours.
