There's something whining in my house....

The other week we could not trace the whine/buzz anywhere. We went ALL over the house, listened to every device, stood outside - nothing. THEN .... traced it to the electric door bell box just above the inside Hall door. A delivery man had rung the bell an hour or so previously and the bell push had stuck in. As soon as it was released the noise stopped.

We had this when some new houses were built near us. A trench was dug next to our house which was apparently something to do with connecting their electricity . For the next three months or so there was a high-pitched whine that only I could hear, and only when it was quiet. It went after a few months.....or I just got used to it.

Lona, we aren't attached to anyone so it can't be that. I mentioned it to DS and he said "maybe the mice have been cleaning their teeth and have left the cap off the toothpaste tube!" Stupid boy! I knew i should have left him on a hillside forty eight years ago, like the ancient Greeks used to do!

Greyduster I can often smell things in my house that 'aren't mine' if you know what I mean. The other day I came home and the house reeked of eucalyptus oil! Sometimes I get a whiff of cigarette smoke! I put it down to next door, although I don't think they smoke!
On a quiet night I can hear the planes' engines when they're waiting on the runway to take off, but never hear them during the day. I'm a couple of miles away.

Every night when I go to be and have just turned out the light it starts, just a light tapping noise and followed by a tzing sort of noise. Have hunted and poked and prodded outside once it gets light, tied up all loose plants and even checked the loft for bats but can't find anything!!? It does seem to go after about 4 am.
DH hears nothing but I have and have always had excellent hearing. (Have to say DC were not always so pleased about that and DGSs have certainly noticed! )

I have a couple of fluorescent tubes in the kitchen under the top cupboards (for extra light on the worktops. I rarely use them but as it's dark today I put them on before I did some food preparation. The one nearest me was whining and DH said it could be on its way out.
I would like some nice modern spotlights instead!

We had a low buzzing noise which we could hear when sitting in our conservatory. We never got to the bottom of what it was. Then it stopped. This house is full of peculiar noises. It creaks like an old sailing ship at times, and i've woken up inthe night sometimes convinced that there is someone walking up the stairs! DH says it's 'settlement noises'! It's been up fourteen years - how much longer does it need to settle?? As of yesterday, every time i go into the dining room i can smell mint, though neither of us has used or eaten anything minty! Christmas paranoia?

Our gas and electric metres (in porch!) both make noises that I can hear clearly when the world is quiet. Also, low drone of traffic on the main road over a mile away. I think some of us just notice these things more than others.

I had a similar experience one night-I got out of bed and checked the house but could not find where it was coming from.It drove me mad for days-until I realised it was in my own head.Tinnitus!
That was some years ago and I still suffer with it but have learned to cope with it.If you cannot find a cause,I would consider a hearing test.

I don't hear a whine but a deep hum especially at night. Some nights it's not there. ...bliss. I have to use my phone to play wave noise to try to blank it out. hugs

My elderly neighbour called me last week to complain about a buzzing noise coming through the wall from our house. I knew we did not have any noise here but as he obviously thought I was hiding something sinister I went next door to check. Sure enough there was a buzzing noise. After much discussion I was allowed to look in their cupboard next to party wall & there was a battery operated pepper grinder in there buzzing away merrily. He was still a bit suspicious that it WAS us (because they had never ever used the grinder) but admitted the noise stopped when I turned it off. It had been going on for ages apparently.
I should add we don't have a habit of making strange noises to annoy our neighbours- they usually say they never hear us (they are VERY deaf) but he obviously thought we were up to no good in here for some reason- made me laugh anyway.
Any pepper grinders hidden away anywhere?

My hearing is fine but I still have tinnitus - a high-pitched buzz.

Our humax drives us wild, but if you want to video something in the night typically you just leave it on.

I was tormented by something similar in our bedroom. Eventually I tracked it down to the switch on an unused plug socket being left in the ON position. One would think that makes no difference if no item is plugged into the socket but it obviously did!

Starting to get somewhere....DH suspects (after I convinced him to listen properly and not just man listen) that the problem lies with the transformer for our low voltage under cupboard lights in the kitchen. He'll be poking around in there all day tomorrow now. Loves a problem.

I get a whining sound from my central heating system sometimes.

Nope, no tinnitus. Just been through full gamut of hearing tests and hearing is fine. Must try looking for laptop-don't use it often as iPad/iPhone is so handy.

I listen permanently to a high pitched whine which no one else can hear - are you sure Katek that you haven't developed tinnitus?!

Could be computer related? Do you leave it on standby?

I had one of those crun. It would give a solitary bleep and wake me up and then be silent while I searched for the source of the noise. Once I had settled back to sleep it would bleep again.
