Your oddest 'compliment'?

Going back a few years when rara skirts were fashionable my late mother told me I looked like one of the roly polys for those that don't remember they were a dance troop made up of rather chubby ladies needless to say the skirt went in the bin and I went on a diet.

When I was very young I was told I had 'come to bed eyes but a go to hell attitude'.

Probably because I couldn't stand the guy.

A woman sidled up to my hubby and said ' your mate is really nice do you think he would be interested in me ?' My hubby replied He is my wife.
We did laugh when she ran off.

Priceless As my mother grew older she became more and more outspoken or maybe just simply started saying what she thought. Bending over to pick something up one day she said 'by - your bottom is huge in that skirt'!! Needless to say it went straight in the charity bag! She was also fond of telling me I had a 'good arm' aka big and flabby!!

i was at a dance night at a local club and a man who was rather intoxicated said i was lovely and i looked like Shirley Williams ( the M.P.) i didn't feel very flattered. but the following week he said to me 'Oh, now i can see you when the lights are on, you don't look like her at all, she's much better looking than you are.

P.S.
then he had the cheek to ask me to go out with him!!! and seemed quite insulted when i said no.

When my children were still quite young an old family friend said "I'd never seen you as the motherly type, but you don't seem to be doing any worse than anyone else I know"

I've never kidded myself that I was ever a beauty, but on one of those rare days in my forties when I was feeling quite good about myself, an eldery churchwarden put his arm around me, gave me a squeeze and said 'Ah, built for comfort, not for speed.' Oh well ...

My future husband told me, when we first met, that I had child bearing hips!

When I was in my early sixties I was walking alone along the road at about 10-o-clock one sunny morning. A young man was walking towards me and as he passed he smiled and handed me a single red rose - the sort with a cellophane wrapping that restaurants sometimes give out to women diners. I turned, calling out 'thank you', and he just smiled some more and went on his way. I've still no idea why he gave it to me but it made my day.

Well Absent, you obviously didn't attend the convent my sisters and I went to. My eldest sister was called carthorse and it wasn't meant as a compliment! We are all on the large side!

My ex was the master of the put down and single entendre - or thought he was.
One night before dustbin collection early next morning I snuggled up amorously to be charmingly asked "have you put the rubbish out" ?

Not to be deterred I purred "I love it when you talk dirty to me ".

My sister's mother-in-law once commented to my mum that I was prettier than my sister. We were both present at the time. Cringeworthy or what?

This is more of an odd insult. I was about 15 and had a new waspie belt. My neighbour said I looked like "a bag of worms tied up ugly."

I said 'Hello' to the local drunk one day . He looked me up and down then said in amazement " I havn't seen you for ages , usually people that you havn't seen for a long time now look like sh*t , but you don't ! "

I have been told that I look good from the back. No comment about how I look from the front though. ?

One 'compliment' I didn't mind because it sounded so pretty was when my mother greeted me one day, looked over my hair and said ' Oooh. silver threads amongst the gold'.

My 8 year old DGD told me that I was "quite young for an old person"

Followed by "grandma were you born with that strange coloured hair?"

My late Grandma was famous for her not so backhanded compliments and once told me that she liked my dress, but preferred the spotty one I used to wear when I was thin!

When I was working in what was then called the geriatric wing of the hospital, I went to speak to a patient who was completely away with the fairies (to use a technical term). She was just waking up from a nap, and she looked me straight in the eye and said, "My, what lovely dentures!"

I could point out that that was almost 40 years ago, and I still have most of my own teeth
