unusual easter eggs

I buy them ordinary chocolate buttons and something else. This year dgs 5 is getting Ludo and dgd 8 is getting a pretty glass bowl containing a chick and which hangs from the ceiling. Those abroad will get sent a small choccy bunny and a book.

M & S have a lovely one that looks like a cocoa bean and another that is filled with fruit and nuts. Hotel Chocolate have one that looks like an egg sandwich - that's a bit kitch.

I bought really nice ones in M&S here just yesterday, I was really happy with the selection, they had a lovely one shaped like a Garden Birdhouse in different colours.
I also got some nice iced biscuits, a chicken with some little eggs.

They got a lot of complaints at Christmas as they did not have much in the way of Christmas stuff, so we are assuming they took the complaints onboard.

I need some Easter eggs that are not chocolate in order to stay on the right side of my DDS - and one GS does not even like chocolate. All ideas gratefully received.

i remember buying one from there years ago now that was a big frog prince on a lilypad that was made of green coloured chocolate - it was quite amazing!

I have just shopped online for the younger grandchildren, who usually receive a non-chocolate gift at Easter with a small chocolate something. notonthehighstreet.com has a fabulous choice of both.

I remember when I was young (eons ago!!) there were Easter eggs made of icing sugar, white, with colourful patterns on them, they were open at one end, and a little scene was depicted inside, all from icing sugar. I always yearned for one, but my mother said they were too expensive.

I had a similar problem with the 'no chocolate or sweets' rule and came up with the idea of buying either egg shaped tins or one's made of card. I could then find a little gift to put inside them, such as a bunny or toy car. They get a lovely collection of different eggs and I enjoy the challenge of finding something to put in them.

My Auntie Winnie gave me one of those frosted sugar eggs one year and I absolutely adored looking at it for weeks. Think I must have eventually eaten it though don't remember the taste at all, just how beautiful it looked.

I must admit I'm getting weary of the 'same old same old' Easter eggs in the supermarkets and newsagents every year. I would really like to get something that's a bit more special than those. Especially as they seem to have been scaled down in size this year - the Cadbury's Creme Egg ones, for example, now only have one Creme Egg, not two. And they're not even proper Creme Eggs anymore, but made from chocolate flavoured candy instead of Dairy Milk chocolate. They are awful .

Two of my GC are too young for Choc Easter Eggs so l picked up two lovely Bunny Egg Cups this weekend, just right to keep and use for boiled eggs and toast! Although the other two GC would love Choc Easter Eggs,3yrs and 4yrs,l'm thinking of their teeth and health so will get them something small and chocolate and something else to go with it. They had China Egg Cups too when they were too small.

My GD goes to Rhythm Time and last year I bought her a Rat a Tat Rabbit instead of an Easter egg. She absolutely loves it!

Hobbycraft do a range of crafty -type stuff for children and last Easter had some nice little felt bags in a bunny or chick shape. I filled these with little fuffy chicks, easter stickers, bunny ears and other card/paper items to avoid the chocolate overload. The other grandparents see to this- absolutely refuse to take on board DD and SIL's requests and provide bagfuls of sweets etc. all the time.

I loved my sugar eggs as a child. I remember having them twice. It has been my ambition to buy one for my DD but have never seen them for sale. They were truly magical. I did eat mine, after a time and they tasted like very hard sugar. There are instructions for making them on Pinterest. Strangely, I have only ever met one other person who received one, so it is really nice to see the above comments. My grandchildren have so many eggs that I tend to buy inexpensive ones.

Waitrose did woodland characters last year made of coloured chocolate. I remember a green frog & something pink- a bunny maybe. They went down very well. I usually buy a modest egg & clothes- goes back to my own Easter bonnet.
I remember those sugar eggs- I loved them but they were very hard to eat. Basically sugar & egg white. The beauty was in the lovely little picture inside. I seem to remember I saved them long after Easter.

I'll be making my own Easter treats this year, classic cornflake nests with mini eggs on and I always do a lemon sponge, both shout spring to me! Another idea for the little ones is to buy Easter biscuits rather than chocolate... I found these the other day i have used them before at Christmas and they were delicious! Lidl's have a chocolate chicken sitting on a chocolate nest with eggs in. It's really cute and quite inexpensive.

They also have really different ones in their De Luxe range, but perhaps more for grown ups? For example an Eton mess egg, containing pieces of meringue, dried strawberry etc, will try to find link, but not everything is on their website.

When I was quite small I had a wonderful chocolate red indian on horseback for Christmas. It was all coloured, i remember the horse was a lovely golden palomino. The trouble was it was too beautiful to eat and sat on a shelf for years until it crumbled away.

You'd definitely get my vote! I don't think that today's children are going to be wowed about Easter eggs. Mainly , they don't need them or want them; a cornflake nest with a few Cadburys mini eggs usually does the trick! Add a book token ( which always works for my grandchildren ) and 'job done'.
As a small boy, and he's now 40, our son could keep his Easter eggs until well into the summer (unless his older sister got her hands on them!). He really wasn't interested!
Having said all this I can still remember the satisfying snap of a Cadburys Easter egg shell! And I'm never bought one today!! I may have to treat myself.

Thorntons have some Candied eggs they start at about five pounds. They are wowish. Mine will have a small chocolate bunny and a gift. They will have an egg hunt following bunny footprints. They will probably make the nests. The little ones have so much today Im happy to keep my efforts simple.
