Hello!

'Hi' seems to be almost as much a convention for emails, as 'hello' is for answering the phone. I tailor my greeting according to the recipient. Oddly enough, my older friends and relatives have taken to 'hi' without hesitation or objection.

Here in our rural area almost everyone speaks as we pass, it's well understood that 'Hello' is the local greeting, anyone who says 'Good Morning' is clearly a holiday-maker.

I don't mind Hello, Hi or Hiya. Not so keen on Alright (or Awright)?

Our GCs were all taught Hiya first thing, as it's easy for a baby to say and sounds really cute.

Hun - what's that about?? My B and SiL use it but then they love everything American.... Grrr, puts my teeth on edge.

Here in Southwest Scotland in the morning it is usually 'morning' then hello or hi. I have noticed that school children here are very polite and use the 'good morning' greeting. I think it must be taught in school.

As long as it is a friendly greeting I don't mind what it is but if it is followed by something like 'how are you? and the answer is'good' it really gets my goat! Someone I love dearly says it and so far I have refrained from telling her that it is up to others to decide if she is good or not!

An older relative of mine, in Yorkshire used to get very worked up about Hiya and aw'right?

Have had recent emails from France (French Estate Agents). They said Hello, I replied Hi

I always say 'hello' face to face and in emails. I work in a hospital charity shop and always say 'good morning' or 'morning' most people reply the same.

Imperfect I have lost all my e-mail connections, and have had to get someone in to sort it out - my son in law, who encouraged me to have a go, is on holiday! I am really a bit too old to be sorting out internet, and such, but found the down-loading quite straight forward,(apart from the internet e-mailing business of course) but very time consuming, so best of luck.

I was advised to download Windows 10 as soon as it came out. I wish I hadn't. My Outlook Office doesn't sync with it so have had to download a free eMClient and I hate it. But I gather we will all have to pay for everything sooner or later. Grrrr.

Word of warning to Imperfect27 and Printmiss: Windows 10 has caused all sorts of problems for me and countless others, although it was fine for first few months. Just put 'problems with Windows 10' into Google and you'll see why! You can revert to original Windows but only within a certain time-limit (a month I think) so if I were you, I'd stick with what you have. Good luck.

'Hi', doesn't bother me. I actually use it myself but other words do,such as bloke, instead of man and kids instead of children!!

When out walking it's usually morning or afternoon if it's said with a smile who cares?

Sorry - to answer the question, I use hello and hi but always hello answering the phone, hi sometimes in emails depending to whom they're going.

I use ciao or sometimes salve here, it depends what is said to me!! Sometimes people are quite formal and say buongiorno,or buona sera (that's a difficult one because they can say bona sera any time after 14:00)!!
We have had DH brother (Italian born) and nephew visiting from U.S.A and that is driving me mad! They have no manners and if you ask if they want anything to eat or drink the reply is "I'm good" meaning no thanks!! Grr!!

I like and use 'hi', but hate 'alright' ! Are people asking you how you are or using it as a greeting? I never know what to say when someone says it to me. Would rather 'hi, how are you?'

The English language is disappearing. I say hello and I take offence when anyone refers to my children as 'kids' . I am not a goat .

It's always been "disappearing" though, hasn't it lasydays? If you read text from only 50 years ago it will sound quite different, even stiff. I've found some old school essays written in a style I'd never use today. And go back a bit further and you find it even more chsnged. Further back still we were using the familiar form thee and thou. I was watching a play some while ago based in the 50s and a waitress slapped a dish down on the table, saying " there you go". I thought that was an anachronism because then we would have said " there you are". In fact I still do. Lots of changes creep into our language but I agree the "I'm good" is one of the most irritating. One DD says that, along with "Can I get...?" When ordering food or drink. She does work with Americans so I suppose that's where it comes from.

Re, Windows 10 - my computer man has forbidden me to get sucked in to downloading it until the absolute last minute. He says that that way any glitches are corrected! I am very obedient

Where I live 'A'right?' seems to have replaced most other greetings. I mostly say 'Good morning' but respond to 'A'right?' by saying it back.
'Take care' used to seem an unnecessary warning but I've gradually come to use it myself. Shop assistants often say it to me lately. Maybe it's because I now look like a vulnerable little old lady ? !!

Where I shop the young male checkout assistant always says " see you later".

'All right whoever?' has been around a long time but I can't seem to get used to it. Forty years ago, when I got married, moved from Derbyshire to Liverpool and started a new job, one of my colleagues said 'all right Liz?' every time he saw me. We were working as analytical chemists in the same laboratory so we saw each other a lot. It got on my nerves because it seemed as if he was checking that I was all right every half hour! Eventually, I commented to another colleague that if this guy asked me one more time if I was all right, I wouldn't be responsible for my actions! He gently explained that it was simply a greeting and all I had to say was 'all right Ian'. I was so relieved. No one was doubting my capabilities! However, I still can't get used to it and automatically want to answer ' Yes, I'm fine thanks.'
